You guys might have noticed that I’ve been drawing more interiors lately! I always struggled with interiors in the past because I’m not great with perspective and scale. I still have a long way to go but I find that doing quick speedpaint studies helps me learn the most! The hardest part for me was setting it up, because I was using a technique that was more suitable for character art.

So for those of you who struggle with similar issues, I put together a step by step showing how I set up an interior speedpaint. The main difference in my workflow when I draw interiors is:

  • I use a lot more layers. I add each main element - like the couch, table, chair, etc - on a separate layer so I can easily use transform tools to adjust them, and later on lock the transparency and add shading to each shape.
  • I’m less reliant on the sketch lines. I just ditch them altogether later on in the process. Usually because my initial sketch is a bit off and I fix those mistakes later on, so the sketch just becomes distracting.
  • I do less with the brush tool and more with the lasso tool. When I use a brush too much on interiors, it all gets really smushy and overly smoothed out, so I stick to harder edges with the lasso and try to get soft gradations with feathered lasso / gradient instead of the brush.

If you haven’t seen the lasso step-by-step resource yet, check it out because the techniques I use with the lasso tool are essential to this interior speedpainting process as well! Hopefully this is helpful!

What you said about using the lasso tool to stop things from looking too smushy was an ‘aha!’ moment. Thanks for sharing!

SO COOL! Thank you so much for these helpful tips!! I totally agree with Boernd - the best invested five euros every month! 🥰

I am afraid of perspective... any tips on how to tackle the fear? :p

OMG thanks this is awesome

This is perfect! I'm working on my first exterior environment, but this technique could totally work for that too! Thank you!

This is great. Thank you for explaining it like this. Interiors are daunting but you make it look fun and inviting to try out.

thank you so much for this, it’s so hard to find tutorials for buildings

Would you be able to show us how you use the gradient tool? I cannot for the life of me get mine to work like yours does. It either comes out solid or half color /half white. It's such a small but mighty tool I want to utilize

yes it's a great tool! if you're using photoshop, it sounds like the issue is that you don't have the right settings. when you open your gradient tool, you'll get a new menu at the top. one of those items is a little box with your gradient color in it. if you click on the arrow next to that, you can choose "foreground to transparent" from the 'basics' option. that will give you the same type of gradient that i have :)

definitely! whenever it comes to straight shapes that use perspective, this technique of just layering on the main blocks bit by bit helps me.

haha yep same here! this technique helps me a lot.. just drawing in block by block and taking it easy, not trying to get it all down at once.

Thank you this is so great 😊 Have you ever used the PS app on ipad? I use procreate and slowly learning PS on pc but I can’t draw with the mouse. But the lasso tool is so cool and seem to work much better in PS than procreate. So I’m playing with PS on iPad. If you use it have you thought about an tutorial for that?😅

🤯😅 Wow! Thank you so much for the info on the gradient tool!! I changed it and I’m so excited to finally use it!! 🥳

Loish

i haven't used it yet! but i am really interested in it since photoshop is the workflow i know best!

Just want to ask, how long did it take you to do finish this drawing?
