Some of you may know that Lightbox Expo online was last weekend! It was so fun, I saw some familiar faces in the chatrooms - thanks everyone who joined! For those of you who missed it, the streams / talks I contributed to are online to view at your leisure, so I figured I'd make a little post about it in case you'd want to check it out.

Above is the livestream I did with my friend Iris Compiet, where we talked about our old art and creative journeys. It ended up being 2 and a half hours long! This one is also up on Iris's YouTube page. We talk a lot about our inspirations, turning points in our learning process, and motivation to draw. Iris's career took off when she was in her late 30's / early 40's, so for those of you who are rekindling your creativity at a later age, it's definitely worth checking out!

I also did a panel on social media with the amazing Kiana Mai and Gabriel Picolo! You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70l6LeNC8cs

And lastly I did a short interview with Kitbash3D where we focused on routine, keeping the creative flow going and mental health: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/738153162

If you have any questions after watching these, drop it below! I'd love to do another Q&A video for you guys this month, so I'd love to hear what you guys would want to know more about!

Lois, hearing this part made me wonder, the power puff community, was that Rowdy Ruff Boys? That website had so many power puff oc's and I was so suuuper inspired and it was crazy. So many creative Power Puff stuff. The way you described it reminded me of that site.

Ahahah I totally forgot about elfwood omg 😱 I was on that too ! Thanks for bringing back those memories !

I think your "humble beginnings" talk with Iris was possible THE highlight of the expo for me. I know it was prerecorded, but that just meant we could talk to you more in chat! It was inspiring to me that you could both look back through phases that you weren't as proud of and recognize positive aspects from those periods showing up in your art today. It's a testament to artistic evolution and it makes me hopeful for myself one day!

ohhh I'm so glad you posted the video here!! I wasn't able to watch it live 😭 anyways, LighBox has been such an amazing experience, I was really happy to see amazing artists like you in there, sharing knowledge and having a good time with us ❤️

Loish

it was so fun! definitely the most vibrant online event i've experienced since the pandemic hit.

i'm so glad to hear that tyler!! i was a bit worried about the length, but at the same time, this was the most natural format for me and iris since we like to really go in-depth about these topics.

that sounds like a fun community! no it was the AHR powerpuff board. AHR stood for "anime hardcore radio" and was just a radio with anime music.. but no one really listened to the radio, they just came for the oekaki boards (there was one 'normal' and one powerpuff themed). i don't think the owners of the site were even aware that this community had sprouted on their site. it later turned out that some guy had hacked the board and made it impossible for new members to sign up, which resulted in the community being a little unchanging bubble of super connected people for a long time. it's a weird story haha

Oekaki was where I started too - You were enough older than me that I missed you but that style was the jam <3

This was so laidback and fun to listen to, and so informative and motivational at the same time! You both seem such genuine, down-to-earth people 💛 Iris’ journey is so inspiring too!

Ah, thanks, I missed out on the “humble beginnings” stream. Really charming conversation, very insightful and great advice at the end - loved it! Yours and other artists stories about their journey always leaves me wondering: Could you have arrived at where you are without trying out all the wrong turns? It seems almost a necessary part of finding your voice.

This talk was so illuminating. I feel that I'm going through a period of feeling like a failure of an artist but hearing two amazing artists say that not have they felt the same way at one point, but have broken through it gives me hope to keep working on my art. So thank you very much.

Loish

glad you enjoyed it! i think every artist goes through this, it's part of our growth... we all hit walls from time to time.

Loish

definitely! the little detours are how we learn what does and doesn't work for us!

I saw you at one fair 2 years back and totally fainted .... it is hard not to put your favorite artists on a pedestal 😁😁😁 I hope to give it another go sometime 😅😅😅

Loish

haha! hopefully we'll be able to travel safely again soon and resume the conventions and festivals. I miss it so much!

I enjoyed the humble beginnings talk. Seeing how you guys begin your art journey was refreshing and relatable. I'm a strong believer that anyone can draw if they put in the time and it was nice to see all the time that you both put to be where you are now with your art.

Took me 3 days to listen to the whole thing, but I loved every minute of it! Seeing both your and Iris' art journey, and hearing everything you had to say about it was so encouraging!

Thank you guys so much for this, everything you said was so helpful! You're both incredible artists and it's really inspiring to see your journeys. I'm 29 and I'm still so all over the place trying to find my voice, and now I feel like that's okay. 🤘

Loish

that is definitely okay and even essential to your creative growth! I'm glad this helped in some way :)

I agree with Tyler. Also, two and a half hours seemed like half an hour, for me it was really interesting to listen and I could almost say it ended up too soon. Also inspired me to take a look on my acient "bad" work and actually opened some new perspectives to me. I wish you ladies could do more of those talks!
