Hey guys! So I tried to cover like 90% of the topics addressed in the questions you guys posted, which ended in - predictably - some super long videos! I tried to keep the production value really simple, just taking my phone and talking freely. The audio might be a bit off but hopefully it’s manageable to listen to!

I sometimes feel super embarrassed about how I talk when I improvise like this, but I figure it’s just a more honest and open way of talking about these things. My apologies for how often I say “Personally, for me…” haha!

So here’s part 1 of 3. In this video I talk about:

• my income sources, which companies I use for prints & merch, and how I got into commissions.

• Technical side of freelancing: which tools I use to manage my business, taxes, insurance, and retirement.

• advice for those starting out in the art industry.

• Pricing: my thoughts on how to price your work.

It gets cut off fairly suddenly but continues in part 2, which I will post right away!

I was thinking a podcast would be quite convenient for us and it'll save some recording space for you too😆 Thank you so much for putting out such detailed videos!! 😊

Thank you so much for sharing some of the more technical sides as well! To start off as a freelancer sounds really hard when you know nothing about taxes and such

Try not to feel like a bad person just because you're lucky in life! You still recognize the areas you are lucky in so you are doing it right and appreciating the opportunities you have. :)

Loish

thank you! i sometimes feel like this puts me in a bad position to give advice to others. so i always want to clarify that so that people know that my personal experience in certain areas may be limited.

Loish

yeah, it's complicated. when i started out it was just all so vague to me and i really avoided learning about it until i had that wake up call. but once i took the time to learn it, it became much more manageable!

It really is! In my country freelancing is not really a thing you hear around a lot but I'll see what I can do! This video really made me realize that's something I should start thinking about seriously!

This is so so special that you’re doing this for us. I am a beginner on this journey and it can get really overwhelming! I am enjoying these tips so much, it feels like a class of freelance artist 101 Hahaha Thank you!! I’m going to continue to watch the other parts now ❤️

Loish

hey! i have some resources in the last video post (https://www.patreon.com/posts/39775820), the GRIP book helped me a lot with productivity but it's only in dutch for now sadly!

Thank you so much for sharing your perspectives and experiences on this. I love your presenting/speaking style - it makes everything so much more personal and relatable! I loved the moment you wanted to take a sip of coffee, haha - I'm a high school teacher and I do this too (and tend to talk a lot as well!)

Loish

haha yeah taking breaks doesn't really come naturally to me! glad you liked the video!

Please put your retirement in something slightly better than a savings account! I don't know what's available in the Netherlands but you should at least have access to some type of basic, low-risk investment where you give your money to the bank for X years and they give you higher interest on your savings in return.

Loish

that's absolutely true! I'm going to start investing next year. the savings account was a short-term solution for me, so that i could get the tax benefits without having to dive into learning about investing.
