Yesterday I posted both a sped-up and normal speed video for my sketching process of the wolves! I usually post faster timelapses, but was getting more and more requests for videos that weren’t sped up. So I wanted to ask which one you prefer, so I can keep that in mind when making future process videos! Thanks guys 😊

I like both but seeing someone draw in real-time is really reassuring for me, I worry about not drawing fast enough. It’s nice to see someone making decisions in real time, even if some of them are do overs or mistakes, it’s great to see the process :)

I can’t speak for others, but it’s brilliant to see both. The sped up version gives us a great overview of the process in a faster more digestible chunk, but the real time allows us to dig much deeper. Watching stroke for stroke, the pressure and angles gives us a deeper understanding. Also seeing the actual time allows us to better understand the time and patience for sketching and drawing. One of the things I find hardest is to not rush myself when drawing because I feel I’m working to slow I think in part this comes from studying speed up demos. The real time gives us a better gauge of speed versus ability. Both are fantastic if if given the choice I’d have both! And you kick ass!

Both are great but I often like hearing the talk through the process and see it in real time. When I see it sped up, it looks effortless and often makes me feel like I'll be 'unable' to do it and doubt my own ability (that's on me and my anxiety though). I like seeing mistakes made/work built up over time and the overall decisions made in the process

I like a mixture. Real time has more take away value for me, but it's not often that I have the time to watch whole videos, so I tune in to the sped up ones more often. I think I prefer seeing real time on Patreon, and sped up on almost every other platform.

real time for sure!! I get much more value out of real time, personally. the icing on the cake would be audio along with the real time video where you are explaining what your thought process :) especially for lighting

I'm not sure if Patreon accommodates Youtube videos, but if you upload your videos to Youtube as "Private" at the normal speed, then people could use Youtube's built-in settings to speed up (or slow down) the videos as they please. I tend to use the speed settings with a lot of long Youtube videos. That could be an alternative for you so everyone gets the speed they want without you having to edit multiple videos =)

Real time is my favorite since I can pause, check menu choices and catch changes I would otherwise miss. Audio would be great with short real time sections. Sped-up works well for "big picture" understanding. You are doing a very fine job of teaching. I deeply appreciate the work it takes to bring either fast or normal video to the Patreon screen. Hope it is rewarding to you, both personally and financially. Someday, I hope for a downloadable collection of training, maybe even print. But right now you are doing an exceptionally good job. ( fyi, I am speaking from the perspective of a technical writer and instructor with Microsoft for over ten years.)

And then, moments after posting my comment, I saw your new update where you figured out the same thing for Vimeo. Yay! Hahaha.

Maybe a blend? I appreciate getting a feel for the actual time involved, but speeding up the process also allows one to understand the 'steps' better rather than get lost in the details. Maybe make videos that slow down for setting up the piece and little detailing, but speeds up the rest?

Also cool could be, especially for very long paintings, you could speed up, but when you have sone informaion to share on a point, or you made a huge decision somewhere when that part is normal speed then. But yes I understand how much work this is, also. I voted for real time but also like to see speedpaintings. The thing is, I am learning more if the vid is realtime, and the speedpainting more gives a"wow feeling". As I am mostly here to learn, i decided for realtime.

i understand! for longer paints i might have the beginning be real-time and then have it speed up as it continues, because it's generally just a repeat of the techniques from the beginning.

thanks for the tip! i found an option on vimeo that lets me do that so this idea worked out in the end, but just thru a different platform :)

thank you for your feedback! i might make videos with audio in the future, but i'd do that for a separate higher paying tier since it is so much extra work to record audio and edit that in!

I like the sped-up process videos because it really allows you to see the "general" steps, however, I do agree that it would be nice to have a real-time at certain key moments to better comprehend the process, especially for digital painting.

Sped-up videos give us an idea of what it takes to get from 0 to 10 and real-time videos allow us to see the details, angles, methods, small tips that not even you can't tell it's there or even matter. I am a patron of another artist that includes both types of videos in his tiers and both are really helpful. You should consider the idea of creating both of them: a real-time with voice over and a sped-up with the process only.
