I got sick with a cold, so I spent an obscene amount of time on the couch in the last few days. After 5 episodes of 90 Day Fiance, I was bored as heck so pulled out my iPad and decided to do some quick re-makes of some older drawings! The original drawing is from 2004, and you can see that in the fashion choices :’) I wanted to update the character to a more current fashion style, so I used the original more as a jumping off point, trying to imagine how this person would look and dress now.

The original sketch is in black and white because I wanted to focus on the shapes. I then proceeded to spend forEVER trying to figure out a way to add color. I’ve added color to b&w a couple of times before but was never happy with the result. It just always felt too ‘colorized’, and especially the skintones felt off whenever I used this technique. In order to make it work, I always end up repainting large parts of it which feels like double the work.

Here’s an attempt at adding color that I ended up abandoning because so much detail was getting lost in the face and I was repainting a lot of it:

So in the end, I went for a more monochromatic look that you can see in the final version. This feels more true to the original black and white sketch which you can see here:

Are you guys interested in seeing a step-by-step of how I added color to this sketch? It’s a bit complex but I’m happy to share! The other remakes I did are coming up - will post them tomorrow!

I love it! It's so fun to see the process too! And I rarely color b&w so it would be interesting to see how you do it.

This was really interesting to read, it took me back to the deviant art days! I loved how you reimagined the character! Process breakdown would be amazing honestly!

Yes, please! Seeing the BTS of your process would be amazing to see, as always. I love how this piece turned out and both versions look wonderful! The colored one gives off such a playful vibe. Love it, even if it was not the chosen route in the end. :)

Oh i loved how the color version ended up! But it's understandable sometimes i dont like how some things come along and have my friends screeching at me WHY DIDNT YOU LIKE IIITT lol It'd be awesome to see the process tho I never quite got the hang of it. Needless to say all three versions are amazing!!

haha yeah whenever I hate something, other people are like "well I like it!" but I've learned to go with my gut on those things. If i don't feel good about the drawing, that doesn't mean it's bad, but maybe just not a fit for what I'm trying to convey.

yes! I got time lapses for the ipad part, and then screen recordings for adding color (did that in photoshop). will try to combine it into one video!

I read you mentioning about using maxpacks guache set for your ipad brushes. Have you used it for this sketch as well? Also, special thanks for describing your process in text form. Not only makes it easier to search for mentions in the past but also is a great way to help me remember a proccess. Cheers <3
