Hey everyone and welcome to a brand new development blog.

This time, I'd like to talk about Porky. I think this is a subject we definitely need to discuss - there's no going around that. Whether you're vegan or carnivore, VRE-Pigskins will make you question everything you know about your moral compass.

We all know that pigskins have been genetically engineer to serve as walking organ farms. At some point, however, something went wrong (or right), and many years later pigskins form tight-knit communities out on the rimworlds.

What went wrong we can only speculate, however the addition of a new sub-xenotype called Boarskins might shed some light on the situation.

Boarskins, a formidable subspecies born from pigskins during captivity, stand as the vanguard of the revolution that ended their exploitation for organ farming. These human-boar hybrids navigate on two legs, wield tools, and communicate verbally, blending human intellect with the robustness of boars. Their resilience allows them to consume a diverse diet without ill effects, though their trotter hands impede fine manipulation.|n|nOriginating from a desperate attempt to avoid the ethical dilemma of harvesting organs from standard humans, Boarskins were an unforeseen outcome of blending human genes with those of pigs to yield more compatible organs. This initiative backfired, giving rise to entities far more anthropomorphic than intended. Boarskins, evolved from pigskins under duress, exhibit enhanced strength, courage, and a pronounced aggression, reflecting their tumultuous genesis and pivotal role in securing autonomy for their kin.

Does a RimWorld-Orc revolution trigger your fantasy fantasies? Well wait no more. I'd like to tell you what genes I have planned for both Pigskins and Boarskins.

CURLED TAIL

Carriers of this gene grow a short, curly tail that does not serve any purpose.

ExcludeTag: Tail

Complexity: 0
Metabolism: 0

Adds a small, curly pig tail. Cosmetic only.

MOUTH TUSKS

Carriers of this gene grow two small tusks protruding from the jaw.

Complexity: 0
Metabolism: 0

Adds a pair of cosmetic only tusks that protrude from the mouth.

COWARD

Carriers of this gene are much more prone to break under pressure and exhibit behaviors typically associated with cowards.

Complexity: 1
Metabolism: +1

Mental break threshold +20%

If Vanilla Traits Expanded is found: forces Coward trait

BRAVE

Carriers of this gene are much more resilient to stress and exhibit behaviors typically classified as brave.

Complexity: 1
Metabolism: -1

Mental break threshold -10%

If Vanilla Traits Expanded is found: forces Brave trait

PORK FLESH

Carriers of this gene have traces of pork in their flesh. Consuming pork by them is classed as cannibalism. When butchered, they will yield pork instead of human meat.

Complexity: 2
Metabolism: 0

Similar to Fungal flesh.

Pawns with this gene have a pork-based flesh. They receive cannibalism debuffs when eating pork, as well as human flesh. If ideology allows cannibalism, they will also be allowed to eat pork. When butchered, they will yield pork instead of human meat.

Mutually exclusive with Fungal flesh and Insectoid flesh coming in REDACTED.

ORGAN REGENERATION

Carriers of this gene have improved regenerating factors in their DNA, allowing them to slowly regenerate organs that may even be completely missing. The process is slow, and will prioritize healing existing, but damaged, organs.

Complexity: 2
Metabolism: -4

Heals a random permanently damaged organ or missing organ by 1 HP every 15-30 days.

It will prioritize healing damaged body parts.

If there is no damaged body parts, but some body parts are missing (destroyed), it will regrow them with 1 HP.

Market value of genepacks containing this gene: ×125%

EXTRA MEAT

Carriers of this gene have much more dense meat and fat tissue, resulting in greater meat yield when butchered.

Complexity: 2
Metabolism: 0

Characters with this gene yield +25% extra meat when butchered.

LOW MEAT

Carriers of this gene have very thin meat and fat tissue, resulting in much smaller meat yield when butchered.

Complexity: 2
Metabolism: 0

Characters with this gene yield -75% extra meat when butchered.

PIGSKIN

Carriers of this gene will yield pigskin when butchered.

Complexity: 2
Metabolism: 0

Characters with this gene yield pigskin when butchered.

LITTERBIRTH

Carriers of this gene are capable of giving birth to twins and triplets.

Complexity: 1
Metabolism: -1

Characters with this gene give birth to between 1~3 babies at a time.

RAPID AGING

Carriers of this gene have an artificial mutation in their genetic material, causing them to age four times as fast as a standard baseliner.

Complexity: 1
Metabolism: 3

Characters with this gene age at a considerably faster rate. Their aging factor is multiplied by 400%.

FAST AGING

Carriers of this gene have an artificial mutation in their genetic material, causing them to age twice as fast as a standard baseliner.

Complexity: 1
Metabolism: 2

Characters with this gene age at a considerably faster rate. Their aging factor is multiplied by 200%.

SLOW AGING

Carriers of this gene have an artificial mutation in their genetic material, causing them to age much slower than a standard baseliner.

Complexity: 1
Metabolism: -2

Characters with this gene age at a considerably slower rate. Their aging factor is multiplied by 50%.

GLUTTONOUS

Carriers of this gene have elastic, bottomless stomachs and are capable of consuming twice as much food. They will become increasingly unhappy if hungry, and most mental breaks will be food binges.

Complexity: 1
Metabolism: 2

Characters with this gene:

  • Have their maximum hunger bar size increased by the factor of x2.0
  • Have their hunger-related negative thoughts effects multiplied by x2
  • All of their mental breaks are Food binges. If there is no food to binge on, the mental break will be aggressive. (Unless they have any of the aggressive genes, in which case it’s either/or).

EVER-GROWING

Carriers of this gene do not stop growing until they reach a biological age of 60. They will keep increasing in size, reaching gargantuan sizes. As they grow, they will become slower, but also stagger-immune. With size, their health pool will also increase.

Complexity: 2
Metabolism: -3

  • Characters with this gene increase in size and bodySize (which should include HP increase and meat/leather yield) with age.
  • They reach 1.0 bodySize at the age of 18.
  • They can increase all the way to 2.0 bodySize by the time they are 60. They stop increasing anymore then.
  • Their movement speed starts decreasing after reaching the age of 18. The decrease is lerping from -0.0 at 18 years to -1.6 at 60.
  • Their StaggerDurationFactor decreases with age as well. It’s lerping from x1.0 at 18 years to x0.20 at 60 years.
  • Their head scales slower than the body, so it remains somewhat smaller.
  • This means that when they are 60, their bodyparts should have 2x as much health. They should be visually 2x the size of normal pawns.

Oh this is exciting. The coward gene is really going to change the dynamic of how pigskins play, both with, and against. I have a few design points to highlight: 1) For the boarskins, I think a missed gene for them is something like Furskin. If you've ever seen a boar, they're covered in fur, and their dermis is quite tough and resistant. I think there would be merit to including that gene, or creating a variant for it. Using base game furskin would reinforce a caste dynamic as the two wouldn't find each other attractive. 2) I love the 40K orkiness of the ever growing, but I am concerned the speed penalty would be too large, and would diminish how threatening they would feel. There's a golden opportunity for that moment of terror where you get a raid and you notice "Oh god, they've got a 55 year old pigskin. This is really threatenining." 3) For Pigskins: Feeding babies already takes an enormous amount of time from mothers in this game if you don't use baby food. Having to individually feed three of them, combined with the new gluttonous trait meaning they'd need even more food and could get into a really bad spiral of mothers/ carers breaking down because they don't have time to look after themselves. My suggestions to counter this effect: one, add a big eating speed modifier buff to gluttonous (so it's also more insidious "WHere's all the food going?!"; two, more complicated, maybe use the framework to tweak the job so multiple babies can be "fed" simultaneously. Would reflect, dare I say it, pigskins having the biological adaptation to support litters (you know what I mean), and would make raising pigskins far less arduous with the new genes (a good thing). THat's all I've got so far. Much excitement for this mod.

PIGZ IS BEST! DATS DA TROOF! BUT WHYZ WE DA BEST?

Im not a fan of pigskins getting the coward trait. Some of my favorite colonists have been pigskins and imo this kinda ruins them.

oskarpotocki

I find it fitting as it offsets other benefits that they get now, however please do remember you can always edit the xenotype in xenotype editor and remove that gene from all pigskins that will spawn!

Boarskin is badass af, i already wanna make a full colony with them!!!

Brandon Pollastri

Gonna be fun making a tribe a Boarskins.

Odai

For the Pork Flesh gene, is their meat identical to pork? So humans can eat it and it won't count as cannibalism?

Carter Cahill

These are awesome! Can't wait to play with them. Have you played with the idea of a gene/meme where people would not care if a pawn of a certain type dies? The idea of making fast growing, litterbirth pork livestock for food sounds like an interesting idea.
