I would assume it works the same way as with the ground no? Like, if you tried it would just quickly shove your arm out of them. That might actually be how he twists around so fast when he is hitting Deku though, releasing his arm so it shoves him out and gives his rotational momentum a nice boost.

IMO it's thee best arc in the show. The emotional moments for Mirio, Kirishima, Deku, Sir and even All Might are truly some of the highest highs of the show.
