I just started watching today, but I haven't seen anyone else point this out in the comments. The 40 second to write a cause of death thing is actually pretty interesting. The number 4 is associated with death in Japan because of the way it's pronounced. And the Death note gives you 40 seconds to write a cause of death, and then 6 minutes and 40 seconds, or exactly 400 seconds, to write details about it. The number 4 comes up a lot in Death Note if you look for it. Also, a little side note; when Light wrote the name of the person who got hit by the truck, he basically wrote the same thing multiple times as you could see in the scene because he wrote his name in every way you could spell it, since names pronounced the same way in Japan could be written with different kanji.
