I think y'all would enjoy Noragami a lot! The manga continues where the anime leaves off, but what arcs the anime does go through are wrapped up. A lot of people think it's just an action-y shounen anime, but the themes have a lot to do with grief/loss/processing death, and the characters are much deeper than they first appear on the surface.

VesperQuartz15

Fruits Basket! I recommended it before so I hope they get to see it one day. It such a great series. I hope we get the OVA this year.

Sam Revlej

I feel like it's unfair and untrue to compare philosophers that happen to have unfulfilling or tragic personal lives with Father. Philosophers don't hurt people; they try to understand aspects of the world. Father confused wanting to know the truth and wanting to be God. This very show is about learning one truth, that your bonds matter more than your power or your knowledge. Reducing the show's message to a restrictive warning against looking for knowledge is doing it a disservice. On the contrary, it's people like Scar's brother learning about things like Xingese alkahestry and combining them with alchemy that save the day.

Caitlin Whitaker

You might enjoy RWBY. Its done like an anime but it was made here in the US so I don't know if you consider it an anime.

Hoenheim was always my favorite character in this series without a doubt. Its funny seeing how people in the first portion of the series see him and he is portrayed as a bad person in a certain way and people hate on him but he is the person who deserved the most love out of everyone in my opinion.

IT’S TIMEEEE

KT Bees

I'm once again (politely and humbly) requesting that y'all watch the Legend of Vox Machina. another shorter series with season 2 coming in January!

James S

These last two episodes are going to be a great way for this channel to close out 2022! 😁

Dylan Snodgrass

Anime suggestion: Reincarnated as a Slime

Mr. 2Dirty

Ok guys. So what people were telling you to look at the door was that everyone’s door in the truth had different designs on them, representing everything they had learned in their life. An interesting thing is that Father’s door however was completely blank, cause he refused to learn anything in his long life.

Eric Smith

Well, probably that mixed with a bunch of comments of "let's look at the door" on one specific episode 😅

Mr. 2Dirty

Yea probably. What’s really messed up is unless I’m reading this wrong, the Truth didn’t see Father’s motivations and reasonings as wrong, it was just he went about it the wrong way and could’ve found a different method that didn’t cause so much despair.

Jeremy

I’d love for you to check out ranking of kings

imcalledgpk

I think that's because the Truth is completely neutral. It's just there to make sure the scales balance. He goes about it in a slightly dickish way, but there's never a point when the Truth takes or gives anything that isn't earned or deserved. In the case of Father, I believe that up until the end, he still had the power of God. The issue with him is that he needed a philosopher's stone to keep it under control. After Ed breaks his stone, he doesn't have anything anymore, and he still had everything he took, but didn't pay anything for it, which caused the Truth to drag him back to the portal and take the payment in full.

zzsaturn

One of my favorite parts of the show is how much Greed and Lings time together ends up having a positive impact on their selflessness towards others… Like I could gush forever about how well thought out the idea of the incarnation of literal greed being forced to share his power with someone else leads him to become completely selfless, but I also love how the growth shows in Ling as well since after that he was the first one to step forward and immediately offer up his philosophers stone so Ed could bring Al back.

Mr. 2Dirty

I can see that. It’s just that the way the Truth worded it was like “So wait he could have found a way to legitimately absorb God with having to sacrifice everyone, but he just never bothered to find the way?”

Danny C

“He’s trying to gaslight the truth” fckn killed me 😂

Oooooh AND it has at least 3 people they’ve simped for in the cast

GM Richter

I highly Suggest Code Geass, or Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade works

Azurai

I second Unlimited Blade Works as well as recommend Fate/Zero

Azurai

I am once again recommending Fate/Zero and its sequel Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works.

imcalledgpk

I think people just wanted you to notice the differences between the gates, you noticed that Father's was blank, which is how they all start out. But it also means that Father never gave anything in order to get anything from it. What's always interested me is what the murals actually are. Ed's mural is the Sephirothic Tree of Life, a real world concept in an offshoot of Judaism. This particular version was designed by a follower of the real life Hohenheim (Paracelsus) Al's mural is an illustration from a book called "The Marrow of Alchemy" a book that was supposedly full of secrets and methods for the philosopher's stone. When taking into account how much of the truth Al would have seen, it makes sense that his door shows the "marrow" which is pretty much the most inside of the bone that you can get.

I don't know if anyone has said this, but you should definitely check out the bloopers. The voice actors were just having fun in the booth, and it's absolutely hilarious.

fr0st

Erased or Fruits Basket love once again!

fr0st

After Death Note, of course. Really keen to see what you guys make of DN

fr0st

Agreed that Hohenheim's journey is definitely one of the more beautiful ones in the series. He starts off as an unnamed slave that has no education and no ambition and ends life finding love, family and community and still wants to have a little more life but is also happy to have completed his goal.

fr0st

Love the discussion about sins vs desires. We all have those desires as humans, but by overcoming them, we can find what is beyond, for example by conquering your wrath, you can find peace and by overcoming your greed, you can find the kind of community you wanted all along when you tried to fill yourself up with empty posession.

fr0st

Love this discussion segment the most so far. Removing your sins and challenges doesn't make you "perfect", it just means you never grow and have no morality because you have no compassion and struggle left inside you.

Melanie .

Would love to see you react to a more serious anime. Like Attack on titan serious. Vinland saga and Dororo would be my top votes. Probably Vinland saga more just because I would love to see your take on the history of Vikings

fr0st

Re: Father's end - Less gaslighting and more that despite living for ages and having everything basically at his fingertips by controlling whole nations, Father never actually learned anything because he was striving for perfection by removing his sins and desires instead of using them to grow. Ironic at even at the end, having access to all the knowledge he wanted and yet still he doesn't know that what he did was wrong or why it was wrong.

Norrin Radd

I still Psycho Pass should be their next show. With their analytical approach, they’ll absolutely love it!

Tmatts

I also don't think that Ed's solution of paying the toll with his door of truth would necessarily work for anyone else. It was only possible, I think, because of the two brothers' souls being bound together. Ed had to leave via Al's door since Ed's no longer existed or else he would have been trapped in the truth.

Darthwin Wright

Would definitely recommend fate Zero, Unlimited Blade Works and Samurai Champloo.

DEATH NOTE!!!!!!!

PearseNation

If you’re DnD fans then I’d like to see you all give The Legend of Vox Machina a shot. It’s the animated series based on Critical Role and the VAs for Mustang and Lust play a large role in that series.

fr0st

Cannot tell y'all how excited I am to see your reaction to Death Note. Be warned, though, it's a lot darker than FMAB so it will be a bit of a change, but there are some really interesting discussion points in there that I can't wait for you to get to, plus of course, the theorizing based on what is basically a giant chess match.

imcalledgpk

I also wanted to add, that in an episode filled to the brim with emotional moments, the one that hits me the hardest is always "Because I'm his father" up until "I'm sorry, Ed" In that moment, Ed probably feels everything. He gets the final thing that he needed from Hohenheim, capping off the emotional journey he has with his father. In the end, Ed got everything he needed; an apology from the person that he has a completely new understanding of.

Vex Valor

I am excited for Death Note react. Some other anime that would be cool to see you react to is Soul Eater and Inuyasha.

Tao of Yol

OMFG if I had a nickel for every time I shed tears over Van Hohenhiem 🥹

jolly

my hero academia would be cool to see a reaction to!!!

Anonymous

I would love for you guys to watch Fruits Basket, I think you would really enjoy it!

Linds Leann

so i’ve been binging and catching up and have noticed several charlotte, NC tshirts. are y’all in NC??? i’m in columbia, SC and y’all should totally do a meet up!!! i think that would be so fun.

Say

One thing: this trading-the-portal thing is only possible for Ed and Al, because their truth portals are connected -- like Truth said, Ed had a "back door" out. Other people might attempt to try it, but they'll be stuck in the truth with no way to escape the white truth-space. In a way, it's a solution tailor-made for Ed and Al, which they figured out perfectly through all they've learned as a person.

OmniBlazer

This mirrors EP3, when Rose asked: "Tell me what I'm supposed to do!" To which Ed answered: "I can't tell you that. You have to figure that out." Looking for shortcuts and solutions without consequences, instead of facing the truth.

fr0st

Ooh, yeah, solid connection. I forgot about that.

jolly

they were actually referencing the bloopers😭

jolly

the “let’s look at the door” was referencing the bloopers😭

Linds Leann

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRbdL5hQ/ if y’all are actually interested in the door analysis. this girl has REALLY in depth explanations of the doors of truth for ed and al. and basically everything you can think of.

Melanie .

Yes I know. I said like attack on titan serious. Not react to attack on titan.

John

CODE GEASS PLEASE PUT IT IN THE POLL AFTER FULL METAL!!! ITS ONE OF THE BEST ANIME OUT THERE EVEN BETTER THAN FMAB

Anonymous

I'm pretty sure you guys have been told already, but please please please watch the FMAB bloopers!

Norrin Radd

Watch Psycho Pass after Death Note! If not then watch Parasyte: The Maxim. 24 episodes each and incredibly entertaining and though-provoking.

Anonymous

One quite interesting observation I've seen about the gates of truth is that they represent each alchemist's research and pursuit for knowledge since Mustang's gate matches Hawkeye's tattoo, which is her father's research of flame alchemy passed on to him, and the Elric brother's are trees of life, Kabbalahs, due to their extensive research of human transmutation to bring their mom back to life; But Father's is empty like his pursuit for "knowledge" and "perfection". He used humans/philosopher stones for everything and refused to learn so much. Thanks for the great reaction guys.

Austin Wiebel

will never not cry about Hohenheim 😭 him & Scar are my 2 favorites

Oron Bar

Don't know if it was mentioned but a lot of the words on the gates of truth are from Hebrew: Elohim and Adonai means God, Chessed means Grace, Tepheret means Glory, Geburah means Heroism/Bravery, Binah means Wisdom and so on.

Nathan

Day 3 of asking you to watch band of brothers

YYZHawk

Don't know if people have already mentioned this, but it's important to note that Truth says that Father never grew/changed from his time in the flask, that's why his portal of truth is blank. He never went forward, he removed his desires (sins) and, as Hohenheim says, only took and destroyed, never created, so he hit a dead end.

Hisaki

It doesnt matter how often I see the end of hohenheim, I'm always tearing up at some point T.T .... I would especially recommend watching "86 Eighty Six" after Death note, its one of the most underrated anime, with a fantastic story, music, animation and great character development. And it only has 23 episodes so far. Violet Evergarden, Code Geass, Fruits Basket, Steins Gate, Spy x Family are also brilliant choices.

Mark O'Leary

Apparently the Truth had the voice of whoever it was talking to in Japanese dub, but they changed it here to only be the case at the last second for some reason.

Mya

I second steins gate, its one of my favorites.

Vex Valor

I love Inuyasha and it would be awesome if they reacted to some older classic anime being they haven't seen them before. I think they would love getting to know the characters from it and it has a solid dub.

Anonymous

I vote STEINS GATE after death note

Remzey Sharif

Damn i cant not tear up that last episode

Anonymous

Fairy Tail is one of my favourites animes, but i only watched the sub version, i don't know if the dub is good.

Anonymous

this may have been mentioned before but all of the homunculi died in an ironic way/ died to their opposite virtue. The first was lust, who was saved by mustang out of his pure love for hawkeye, greed died twice, both in attempts to sacrifice his own life, gluttony got eaten by his own kin in a useful way, not just mindless eating, envy had his own flaws pointed out and was taken down by those he was envious of, wrath died with a peaceful smile on his face, and pride was humbled by someone who WASNT prideful

2023-04-27 22:12:14 I highly recommend and vouch for The legend of Vox Machina. It's got Matt Mercer (Voice of Levi ackerman) the lady that played Azula in Avatar, Travis Willingham (VA for Roy Mustang) and Laura Bailey (VA for Lust) and a bunch of other charming and top notch VAs, the story is awesome, and is based on the first D&D campaign for the live stream of 'Critical Role' Where else can you get all of these amazing VAs and an awesome story? Not to mention it kinda gives you 'Arcane' and 'Invincible' vibes. and with season 2 coming on January 20th, I think now is the best time to hop onto the craze wagon.

Another way to look at father's blank door is that he never attempted to use equivalent exchange as a principal in it most basic sense -- all is one and one is all. In order for there to be an out, there must be an in, if you only look outward to leave the flask without addressing the "truth" of yourself, you cannot grasp what there is to learn and grow at all. No knowledge gained is accurate without this proper foundation or facts about yourself, let alone the additional issues/"symptoms." It's kind of like when someone says an opinion can't be wrong -- it depends on your base fact if that's true and how many abstractions you go out. Even when it's a simple opinion "I like bananas," it's based on the fact that your taste Buds are arranged in a certain way at a certain place at that period of time on your tongue to make it that way for you. If you abstract outward without starting with that as your base even your "subjective" can be wrong, can be blank.

The pursuit of knowledge, the ongoing search for objective "truth," the meaning of life, such a deeply human aspiration. It is the fuel that keeps a philosopher's fire burning, their passion. Many people, from Kierkegaard to Nietzche to Kant, have given up their sanity, their personal relationships, their personal belongings, all in the pursuit of some grand, final "answer," ultimate enlightenment, something that will make them "more." Through Ed's final transumation, the series declares where it stands on such matters. Ed gives up this endless pursuit, the very idea that everything is even quantifiable and knowable to a mere human. Whether it be that we humans cannot trespass upon the territory of Gods, or that the universe is simply too large and our perspective too limited to see all of it, Ed accepts that the pursuit is ultimately fruitless. And he gives up on that which once defined him, the thing he didn't have but longed for, in favor of the thing that was always right beside him, his brother, friends, and family. In a world where life has no inherent meaning, and where nothing we do matters, all that matters is what we do. The good we can do for ourselves and others. And the knowledge that happiness is only real when shared.

Dang it Kenny, I thought I was finally going to be able to watch this episode without crying! I've watched this show a thousand times, and I'll never not tear up at this episode ToT

Sydney

Sad FMAB is coming to a close but death note it amazing and so worth the watch. after that i would 10000% recommend Jojo's bizarre adventure. its pretty long with all the seasons but each arc is a totally unique and separate story to the other arcs. it's pretty much the grandfather of fighting manga its inspired 100's of them. plus the english dub features PLENTY of levi's voice actor (just for u montana lmao)

Sydney

this really hits hard every time. in the end the immortal god-like Hohenheim just wanted to grow old and die like a human, such an amazing character and tragic story.

bloodyshadow1

something I love about fullmetal alchemist, is that everyone matters. Most anime, they leave people behind because the story about the main characteers is what matters. But in this, everyone, people who you think wouldn't matter are never forgotten. Nina despite being in 1 ep is remembered and her lose is carried by Ed even now. The chimera's who would be mini boss squad in another anime are saved here and the heroes wouldn't be able to win without them.

i love that fathers gate in the realm of the truth it was blank. As Hohenheim said father has never grown for the flask. everyone's door is different, like mustangs looked like the flame tattoo on hawkeye, like the more you grow the more your gate changes so i love that even at fathers end, it was still blank
