This episode is a train wreck. Things have been leading to this right from Spike's first appearance in 2x3. One of the reasons this episode works so well IMO is that in the back of our minds we are wondering how Spike is going to react to Dru's reappearance. Is he going to continue to remain the way he has been recently or is he going to revert back to who he was with Dru? He doesn't do either one. His decision to kill Dru "for Buffy" is very decisive, so we see Spike change. That's one of the things that the Buffyverse does so well: make us wonder what's going to happen, and then do something that is surprising but also organic.

Seems like I'm in the minority here, but this episode is barely watchable for me. I hate every Spike story after he falls in love with Buffy, he's lost literally everything that made his character interesting or fun (other than James Marsters' charisma, I guess) and I know to some extent that's intentional, but I don't find it fun to watch at all. Drusilla is also completely wasted here, she only maintains a fragment of the sheer presence she had in season 2. Maybe she just fit better into season 2's darker, more gothic color scheme than the decidedly colorful seasons 3 onwards. You know when I liked Spike and even the idea of him and Buffy? In season 4 when their relationship was this fun, kind of childish bickering with heaps of tension and chemistry. Not so much now that he's literally just a pathetic fucking stalker. How anyone thought this was the right direction to take his character is forever beyond me. Come to think of it, you know when I liked Riley a lot, too? Early season 4, before he fell in love with Buffy, when he was his own character, he had a very fun dynamic with Willow that completely disappeared over time and he didn't immediately fall for her during their meet-cute. And then they both did what every love interest of Buffy's does, fall in love, have their entire universe be engulfed by her and cease to have any characteristics or stories of their own except "being in love with Buffy" and becoming a walking caricature of their former selves. Not on board with this trend.
