Well we did get Oz - and someone else. That moment with Spike making fun of Angel from the rooftop is great fun. Angel destorying the ring feels like the writers didn't know how to resolve the issues that would arise if Angel was unkillable. The reason they give - that Angel might maybe perhaps someday forget about the people he's helping now - is just nonsense. The unspoken reason - that Angel wants to earn his redemption rather than have it given to him - is better but still weak. All of it just feels like a failure on the part of the writers.

I think they could've pulled the reason off if there was an arc (even just a few episodes) of him trying out the ring and more organically coming to the realization when he fails someone. That could've been interesting.
