By now, I've probably called eight or nine different videos my "magnum opus," and most of those times I'm exaggerating. This time is no different, but I will still call this video my magnum opus.

PASSWORD: bikinglad

If you're confused, good. The only context you need is that I do an exercise stream every weekday on Twitch, and every time I die in the game I'm playing, I have to do a "High Intensity Biking" section where I bike hard for a minute. This is the backdrop for those sections. Here's what it looks like in context.

I personally love the PS1-looking background I made using Google Earth. It's not perfect, but that's partially because I had to actually go into the code to try to make it move correctly. Using every bit of that "Intro to Computing" class I took in college.

Love to make videos by copying and pasting a bunch of text. And don't let "final tour.kml" fool you, it was not the final attempt I had to make. In fact, I ended up having to just record a tour from scratch. Oh well.

Oh and while I've got you here, let's talk next videos. So far, I've got two ideas bouncing around in my head, and I'll probably try to finish writing and potentially film one of them by the end of next week.

One is that Classic Relatable Humor™ you all expect from me. It's totally normal and relatable. Everyone will watch the video and say "Yes, I relate to this."

The other is trying to make use of two of the only things I got to keep from Polygon: a busted VHS camcorder and a 14-inch CRT TV. Who can say why Polygon didn't want these two pieces of large antiquated technology, but I'm sure as hell going to use them for all their worth (they are not worth much). This video may not be funny at all? Maybe it'll be scary? I don't 100% know yet. It's a weird idea and it might go horribly wrong, but I really want to try and make a video that could only exist in the VHS format, and we'll see where the medium takes us.

As a tiny final note to this post, there are now over 3,000 people who have joined this Patreon! I have said thank you a lot, but that's only because I keep having more and more stuff to say it about. I've had to spend a good chunk of the past few weeks doing a bunch of tedious administrative stuff (banks, health insurance, tax planning, etc.) to make sure I'm in a good position as an independent creator, but y'all have made the transition not just easier, but almost entirely painless. Beyond this, I've got a couple very exciting, non-YouTube related things that I can't talk about right now coming up in the near future, so thank you for allowing me the flexibility to do a bunch of cool new things! Thank you thank you thank you.

Congratrulations

Very intense.

Very hyped to put on my resume "I was a part of the 'Crush the Can' mob"

What i like about this video, while not necessarily intentional, is it highlights the most important thing about exercising: the only person you should be competing against is yourself! That's how you push past your limits and reach the stars. Also this should go on that list of "movies where they just fly away at the end".

Scezumin

14-inch CRT TV? I think you mean "valuable Super Smash Bros Melee display"

Anonymous

I'm thrilled to see how well all that footage turned out. This video makes me want to get on my treadmill and do speed intervals!

coding in kml is just pure pain, i appreciate the dedication. also can't wait for that very relatable™ video!

This is art. If you ever feel like releasing loopable bits that work as Zoom backgrounds I will rock that until the end of the universe

zacH

This may just be your magnum opus. :D Both paths to a new video sound cool, will definitely enjoy either! Also, nice protobeard!

My husband and I got married in 2010 but my BIL had a camcorder so we have a VHS video of our wedding (a wedding which i didn't want to have in the first place but I settled on a pastor marrying us in my mother's living room.)

Dave

Hot damn this is good, I kind of want a looped version for workouts sessions longer than one minute lol

Anonymous

You keep magnuming the opuses (opi?) and we'll keep appreciating them. This brought joy into my life.

ru5tyb1ke5

I’ve really enjoyed the more experimental content you’ve done so I’d love to see more of that if that’s where your heart takes you

Anonymous

hello brian this is very good and i am very happy to feast my eyes upon it and immediately know joining this patreon was a good and correct decision

Anonymous

Brian I think you should go as out there as you want because that's what we pay for

L

As long as you don’t make anything like Be Your Own Boss ever again. It is a magnificent magnum opus but JFC that went from ‘bdg being bdg’ to ‘HORROR FILM’ real quick.

Hey Brian, ive been asked to let you know that the new version of the biking backdrop (area 51 specifically) is apparently a bit of a wild time for people with motion sickness, what with all those quick turns. I dont know anything about making google earth videos so idk how much control you have/how finicky it is but fewer and/or slower turns would be greatly appreciated!

Anonymous

To add to what Marley's saying, the backdrops so far which have been said to cause the least motion sickness are the Times Square and Route... 46? backdrops, because they feature no turns at all. I have some other ideas about what might be specifically inducing sickness but I'm gonna do some consultation before jumping to conclusions.

Anonymous

I’ve come from the future to say that you absolutely put the camcorder and CRT TV to good use.
