After examining her legs, and reviewing her X-rays, the nurses deliver the bad news. Mary has broken both her legs, the left one quite badly. She will have to be placed in casts to allow the bones to heal. The nurses quickly prepare for the casting procedure. They start on Mary's right leg, placing it in a toes to crotch LLC. Every movement of her leg, even once casted, causes Mary pain. They then proceed to cast her left leg. Starting at the toes, the cast goes up and keeps going up. Despite her pain, Mary watches with mixed curiousity and despair - this cast goes up over her hip and around her waist! There is no way she can sit up, let alone move! She cannot quite believe how badly her day has turned out. With the casts finished, the nurses clean Mary up, wiping the plaster from her skin. They then transfer her to a hospital bed, her new home for the next several weeks. Mary gets settled in and tries to rest and let the pain subside. But the nurses insist on having her change her position to help prevent bedsores. First they move her onto her side, and then onto her stomach. This will be a long hospital stay for Mary!
