Did you ever wonder why did they make the head padding so bulky in the original Ring Frame casts?

I think we might know now why they have done in in that way.

At first we were like 'pffff... we will make it way better looking than that' so we went with our standard minerva head cast with just some extra padding.
And it do works ok, when patient is standing on lying on his back, but once we have turned our patient on her tummy with face facing the floor, she kind of began turning purple, and couldn't be in that position for too long.
This was the moment when we went 'Oh... so that's why'.

So the really bulky head did serve a purpose. It was to envelop the head in a comfy pillow, so no matter in what position the patient would be in, his head would always lie on a really soft, pillow-like padding - this is what we will also do with our next patient.

If you look at the pix I sent you a while ago of the casting process (Casts2.jpg) you can see that they used some sort of foam sheet around the head and neck. It looks like there are 2-3 layers under her chin. It's really cool to see this re-created. The effort it took was obvious! Thanks!

Yes, we need to get some kind of foam for that. We tried using some kind of foam before, but it was too springy for this purpose.
