A moment’s inattention crossing the street is all it takes to change a young woman’s life forever… The patient wakes up a few days later in hospital to find a machine breathing for her, the world framed by the metal bars of a halo brace, and her broken limbs casted. Panic sets in as she realizes that something is seriously wrong. A nurse calms and soothes her, trying to get her to relax as she runs some basic tests. When the patient can’t feel anything, she again starts to panic and cry. The nurse again calms and soothes her, explaining that for now it appears she is paralyzed from the neck down, a complete quadriplegic.
The nurse does caution her that it is early in her recovery, and that a final diagnosis will have to wait. The nurse leaves the patient to cry to herself as her new reality sets in. The weeks pass as the patient slowly heals. The nurse tends to her needs and tries to keep her spirits up. Over a month later, the nurse prepares the patient for her first excursion in a wheelchair. Despite the patient’s protests, the nurse dresses, transfers and then secures the patient in the wheelchair, and then takes her on a slow tour of the hospital.
The nurse eventually wheels the patient outside into a courtyard for some fresh air. She leaves the patient to try and enjoy the outdoors for a while. The patient sobs unconsolably as she realizes that she can no longer feel the coolness of breeze or the warmth of the sun anywhere but on her face. She cannot even breath on her own.
The patient is frustrated and depressed. Her life will never be the same, all her plans and hopes for the future are dashed. As she stares blankly at the ceiling she longs for her body to obey her, to move and do what she wants it to…
