Hey, I'm posting late, but I'm posting!
Once again, I've taken some liberties with this one, but I sure hope you'll enjoy it nonetheless.
GALLBLADDER
Short story by Adam Lunter
Chéri was pounding away on his game controller with his tongue in the corner of his mouth when Finn walked in and loosened his tie.
“Yo dude!” hailed Chéri, not looking away from his game. “How’s it hangin’?”
“Busy day,” grumbled Finn. “Luckily the bills are all paid, the broken security cam in Booth Four was replaced with minimal hassle, and the new liquor license arrived just in time. So CB is staying in business.”
“Good deal!” Chéri responded, holding up a thumb. “You know they’d be lost without you in the office there.”
Finn smiled wanly. “I’d get started on dinner, but I have to run back out,” he sighed. “Little emergency. Are you going to be able to feed yourself?”
Chéri paused his game and looked over his shoulder. “Yeah, I can throw together a grilled cheese. What happened?”
“It’s Daddy Adam’s husband, Mike,” Finn answered. “He had to go in to the hospital.” “Oh noes!” exclaimed Chéri. “Is he gonna be okay?”
“Yeah, they’ve gotta take his gallbladder out,” Finn said. “It’s a common enough procedure, so he won’t be in for long, I’m sure. But Daddy asked me to swing by the house and pick up a few things, so I’m going to drive over there after I get changed.”
“Day-um!” Chéri said as his jaw hung open and his eyes widened. “How’s he gonna take a piss after that?”
“What are you talking about?” Finn asked.
“You said they were taking his bladder out.”
Finn rolled his eyes. “No, not his regular bladder. His gallbladder.”
“Huh?”
“It’s an organ in your abdomen that helps the body digest fats,” Finn explained.
“Oh, so it keeps you thin, then?” Chéri asked, his eyes brightening.
Finn closed his eyes and shook his head. “Yeah, that’s what it does, Chéri,” he groaned. © Adam Lunter, 2022 Pinky Is The Brain - 1
Chéri nodded and smiled vacuously. He turned back to his game. “Hey, you can live without your gallbladder, right?”
Finn bit his lip at the absurdity of the question. “We’re gonna find out,” he said. “I mean, I’d think you could,” he said, plunging his hand into the bag of Funyuns next to him. “You did say it was common and there’re so many fat people around, so I guess so.” “Dumber than paint,” muttered Finn as he walked into his bedroom to change clothes. Chéri shoved his handful of Funyuns into his mouth and…
…sat up in bed, panting and looking around him in the dark.
“Hey, you alright?” said a sleepy voice next to him.
Chéri looked over and saw Finn’s silhouette in the dim light coming from the window behind him. His hair was a mess of cowlicks and corkscrews created by sleep. “What’s a gallbladder?” Chéri asked.
“Huh?”
“A gallbladder,” Chéri repeated. “What does it do?”
Finn made a noise that indicated he had no clue.
Chéri sighed with relief and lay back on the pillow. “Oh, thank goodness.” “You’re acting weird,” Finn commented. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
Chéri smiled in the dark and nodded. “Yeah,” he said. “It was just a bad dream.”
