Okay, I'm no gonna lie, Karim went through 1 000 000 different personalities, but I knew I wanted him to be short and full of attitude.

So going from there, he started out as a bit of a "mean gay" who's very sassy and judgmental as a front but deep down, he's insecure and just wants to be loved... Thing is I wasn't in love with this concept, it felt a bit too shallow and archetypal. And I also discovered that the guy he was inspired by was a trash person so I moved away from this idea.

His following iteration was meant to be the kind of guy who's always out, always partying, always high, who has too many friends to keep track (and doesn't really care to) and who's SUUUUPER promiscuous. Basically, I was unknowingly making him a circuit party gay. This version still felt a bit too shallow. I didn't have much to grasp on to humanize him.

And it's through talking to a friend who's sober now that I realized... Since Karim has grown older, wiser, and smarter, perhaps he was the party gay before, but perhaps he has grown out of it now. He's still a lot of fun to be around, he's still a great drag queen, a fantastic host, and he still enjoys sex, but maybe he has more solid roots now, maybe he's a liiiittle bit more down to earth. Just enough so he can actually be all there and enjoy his time with his new chosen family, at Cabaret Bara.
