Way back in season 3, when we first meet Juliet preparing for her book club meeting with the Others, the book they were discussing was Carrie, by Stephen King. Many thought it would come back into play, especially because it seemed the Others wanted people and children that were special.... If the Mother wasn't a smoke monster of sorts, she at least went full Carrie on that village. Walt, remember the woman asking Michael if Walt appeared in places he wasn't supposed to be, like astral projection, he did warn Shannon of what had happened to the raft, and tried to warn her from getting shot, and Walt seemed to disrupt birds's electromagnetic field sense, and he was also psychic, getting premonitions about the hatch. The Others wanted Locke who was miraculously cured of his paralysis, they wanted Juliet who worked scientific miracles and helped her sister have a child. Benjamin also saw his dead mother and told Richard, they might have thought he was special. Eloise became psychic sometime in the past, and Widmore recruited Miles for his abilities, and Hurley and Desmond became "special" after their time on the Island, and many of the Oceanic Six sometimes started seeing dead people and visions to get them back to the Island.

The Mother explained how the reason she killed their actual mother was if she hadn't, she's find the other men on the island and they'd join them, grow up, and become a threat to the island, depleting the island of its natural resources, exploring their curiosities, taking the island and using it for monetary gain and selfishness. Like The Dharma Initiative, like Widmore, like Ben. She wanted to protect them from that want and need for answers and to question "WHY". Questions inevitably lead to curiosity which leads to putting things at risk and the potential for mistakes. Maybe the light is like "The Force". She doesn't want them to exploit The Force. She doesn't want them to question it and potentially use it selfishly. Our world of course has a long history of murdering people in order to save more life, from many cultures. From some points of view(The "mother"), the greed of humanity threatening the death of life is worth removing those who wish to take it from existence. This is why I feel like The Mother is the perfect combination of Jacob and The MIB. You can see in them the traits from her that each of them took. Those men the kids saw kill the boar appeared to be similar to Romans, we've seen Egyptian carvings, Aztec looking markings, The Temple, old lighthouses, Spanish slave ships, etc, and eventually 50s US military, The Dharma Initiative, and flight 815. From seeing these over the 6 seasons we can gather that many cultures have come and gone from The Island over the years. She knows humanity is self destructive because she's lived so long, possibly has seen who knows how many civilizations of people who've left their monuments and projects and statues on The Island that we've seen many times. She already knew if the MIB joined those people he would be corrupted. And as see in the current timeline, she was right. The MIB seems hell bend on doing whatever he can, killing whoever he wishes regardless of the moral consequences to leave the island. He's also self aware of that fact, having grown up among them. Her quote of they come, fight, destroy, corrupt, always ends the same is the same thing the MIB first said when we met him. Meanwhile Jacob has hope for people, eventually, to do good, progress. He understands family values, taking care of an older matriarch, protection of the island, honesty, and traits many of our main characters share, along with coming to terms with the sins of the parent(lots of murder, questionable movties of course, but seemingly not for selfish reasons, unless you count risking the light going out selfish), valuing life by keeping his brother(or those who wish to take the light for themselves or extinguish it trying to leave) a prisoner instead of killing him,(Same with the Losties with Ben in Season 2) Unfortunately Jacob doing what he did to his brother in a fit of rage, making him The Smoke Monster gave his extremely angry brother the power to take a lot of life easily, an easy means of taking our his anger, which only enhances the danger of The MIB, and making the prospect of him wanting to leave the island much, much worse. Just imagine the killing spree The Smoke Monster could get up to if he arrived in Los Angeles. I doubt his selfish nature of doing anything to get what he wants isn't something he can just turn off after years of practice. The island didn't terminate pregnancy's and kill mothers. That was The Incident. All of the second half of Season 5 was leading up to The Incident. This is something you kind of have to add up in your head and think about in hindsight after the end of Season 5 on your own to understand, plus a visual timeline helps. The characters didn't have much time after the end of Season 5 to really contemplate was happened since they were transported back to 2007(current island time) without the opportunity to think about what they left, how what they did effected everyone else back in '77, and then they were pretty much straight off to The Temple after trying to save Juliet. JULIET: "Don't you understand that every time I try to help a woman on this island give birth, it hasn't worked?" SAWYER: "Well, maybe whatever made that happen hasn't happened yet. You gotta try. You gotta help her. You're the only one that can." The island's electromagnetic energy being released all at once(We've hit the pocket!) (which would later be released in small amounts via The Hatch computer by pressing the button every 108 mins), and then that large amount of magnetic pull energy itself was canceled out AND it canceled out the hydrogen bomb which detonated, it's energy was.... I'm not sure the right word, the one they used in the show is "negate", but I guess it like absorbed, or subtracted by the electromagnetic pull of the islands electromagnetic magic, so no damage was done? But I guess the radiation still remained? (this is a part of the show that I admit barely makes sense in the fiction of the show, that I can barely understand, it's very much an "Okay I GUESS that makes sense?" type of thing) Remember all the concreate poured underneath "The Hatch" in season 2? That was used because as Sayid said "The last time concreate was poured over everything in this way was Chernobyl". I guess they didn't use enough concrete, and the bomb radiation poisoning leaked causing the women's pregnancy's to turn on themselves. Remember, Ethan(along with his mother) who was born just prior to The Incident in 1977 were fine. Juliet helped give birth to him. At the end of Season 5 prior to the incident Dharma evacuated all non essential personnel, so like with Miles's mom, spouses male and female who weren't essential to the Dharma staff left the island and never came back. That means less attempts at pregnancies. Once kids I guess around Ethan's age started to mature I assume the pregnancy problem started occurring until Richard was able to recruit Juliet. Considering Juliet was the one who hit the bomb, it's appears she may have caused the incident, caused the pregnancy problem by detonation, (along with the negation of the explosion by the electromagnetic energy), which was ironically the thing which brought her to the island in the first place. She caused the pregnancy problem in the past that she was trying to fix in the future, I'm thinking "rebirth" might be a reference to The Smoke Monster. As we saw, his body died, but he was reborn as Smokey.

Like the Others, the Mother considers every outsider corrupt, sinful, so probably killed the real mom for that reason and took the children, just like Ethan wanted to take Aaron and get rid of Claire, like Ben with Alex and Danielle, except Ben turned out to have more compassion, if you can call letting Danielle go insane with grief on the island for years "compassion." But it seems the Mother manipulated everything from the start, even if things did not go exactly like she wanted, all to have a successor and have someone kill her, because she likely couldn't kill herself. If the Mother manipulated fate in a way that the brothers can't kill each other, and they can't leave the Island, then what Jacob did was maybe release the consciousness from his brother's body, and it was corrupted inside that light, maybe losing its own light, or it is just mad with anger, so in essence the Smoke Monster is the corrupted spirit or soul of the brother, trapped forever in the Island, which is indeed a fate worse than just dying.
