Despite the insanity this episode simmons is actually testing a real theory in science called Novikov self consistency principle. Since the team wants to break the loop of failing to save the world they would have to disprove this theory because this theory says that any action that causes a paradox (which is any action that breaks the loop like fitzsimmons or yoyo dying) has a 0% chance of happening. They are using this theory as a reason to go on a risky mission not as a belief that time can not be changed but as reassurance that they can risk it because their odds are good that they would survive it if time is truly fixed. If they fail then they are still headed down the right path because something has changed for sure if they died which means they broke the loop.
