Loved this reaction!! The novel Dune came out in 1964, YEARS before Star Wars was even developed. It's such a great book series, and was revolutionary for it's time. Similarly to Lord of the Rings with the fantasy genre, Dune influenced a lot of future science fiction movies/books, including Star Wars.

Kevin

You can see how Star Wars was pretty damn inspired by Dune (which came first). Desert planet, a destined hero with special ability to influence people.

Thanks for a great reaction! This was directed by Denis Villeneuve who also directed Arrival which you all saw a while ago. Like others have said, Dune was hugely influential to sci fi and you clearly saw how much Star Wars took inspiration from it. Also add me in to everyone hoping you react to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings!

You're also going to see a little of Game of Thrones in the first few Dune movies, as some of the GoT character arcs are very similar to some Dune characters. There's a surprising amount of events from certain Star Wars movies that are similar to events from some Dune books, and the original Star Wars movies borrow many superficial details from the first Dune book. In some ways Dune was decades ahead of it's time, although the writing style does feel very old. There were 6 books in the original series, and this movie covered half of the first book.

Hoping to see you guys react to Shang-Chi soon! Such a great movie

I wish the search just a little about Dune before watching it because Dune was actually the big inspiration for George Lucas when he created Star Wars, it’s really funny that Storm talked about Star Wars at the end. Dune is the bible of Sc.Fi

A few of things you probably misunderstood while watching. 1.) There are no sentient alien races here. Every character you see that's not an animal is human. Lady Jessica is a human, she's just part of the Bene Gesserit order, which is why she has these weird abilities. 2.) Spice isn't used for time travel. It's used for space travel. It's a direct analogy to oil in the real world. Without spice, space travel becomes almost impossible. And the only planet in the universe which has it is Arrakis. That's why it's so valued. 3.) Dune doesn't have references to Star Wars. Star Wars has references to Dune. George Lucas took lots of ideas from Dune. Dune is to sci-fi what Lord of the Rings was to fantasy.

Aaron Barlow

Yes. It's used to promote telekinetic abilities allowing the guild navigators to fold space enabling a warp drive- like space travel. This was explained in Lynch's Dune which I think gave the non-initiated viewer more world building info.

Regarding your question of the fate of Josh Brolin's character Gurney Hallack, we just don't know. We don't see him die on camera. The crashing ship didn't hit him. You can see the smaller Atreides army charging the much larger Harkonnen force, then the scene ends. I'm assuming that he'll show up in part 2, I don't think they'd kill that character off screen. Anyway, great reaction.
