All 3 of us were blind to this! Thank you for requesting and voting on our Patreon! There were mostly positive reviews about this movie and we did hear about some problems too. As a story, we loved the movie so much. The acting was phenomenal too! Racism is a terrible thing and we are new to learning about 'The Magical Negro" trope. Please leave your thoughts about The Green Mile in the comments and please be respectful and kind to each other. We have a great community and want this to be a positive as well as educational experience! :)

The Green Mile has been trending upwards online and a lot of people are talking about it. I'm not sure why, though. I don't know any black person who is a fan of this movie. That's problematic. Maybe some white people are subconsciously missing the good ol' days when white people had power over black folks and this movie takes them back?

Ethan Turner

I wouldn’t go that for woah. It’s just a very good directed movie and I have now seen three black reactors react to it lately because of its growing in popularity. And they all loved it. Not saying all will but just a lot do. Also it’s Stephen king adapted movie so that why a lot of people like it as well as Shawshank

Carlos Hurtado

i can see why some people would be offended by the trope. their feelings are valid and should be heard. I've also seen quite a few black creators react to the film and enjoy it.

Awards are generally meaningless, but Michael Clarke Duncan should have gotten an Oscar that year.

Good grief. Why can’t a movie just be a movie anymore? 🙄 I’m Italian and I love The Godfather movies, even though there’s ton of racism towards Italians in them. I’m a Christian and there’s a lot of God/Heaven/Etc. in this movie and I don’t complain about it.

Kenzie8814

Please add Girl, Interrupted and Beetlejuice to the polls. Two very good Winona Ryder movies.

Darnell Holland

Loved listening to your thoughts on the film and watching your reactions... Thank you!😊

Amazing movie! Glad you gals finally got to see it 😊 There's some good older Tom Hanks movies like "Big". Turner and Hooch is another good one.

This movie conveys a lot of philosophical questions, as well as emotions. John Coffey is essentially a Jesus figure who casts miracles and takes into himself the pains and diseases of the world, and gets executed despite his innocence. And just like Jesus, he had the power to save himself, but didn't want to use his power for his own selfish benefit. (I know John's and Jesus' motivations are a bit different, but the allegory is there) This is why I laugh at the people who criticize this movie because the "Magical Negro" has the power, but doesn't use it to save himself. They clearly don't see the religious allegory there. This movie makes us question how we see the value of life. Paul has cut short many lives during his career, but he lives on for over 100 years old. His main contemplations are that his friends and loved ones have passed away, leaving him behind. So is his long life a gift or a curse? Or both? There's also the notion of love being taken advantage of by evil, in the way Wild Bill used the sisters' love for each other so they wouldn't rat him out. So there's another question: Is being full of love inside necessarily a gift, or a curse? Or both? Lastly there's the contrast between the weak, pathetic, insecure Percy who bullies people around and throws tantrums when things don't go his way; and the strong, gigantic, but lovable John who has true strength and power within him and doesn't flaunt it. This movie was brilliant. I first saw this when I was 10 years old, and was the first movie that genuinely made me cry, especially at the part where Percy stepped on Mr. Jingles for no reason other than to show off his power and authority. However, if someone's main takeaway from this movie is racism, racism, racism, magical negro, racism, white supremacy, racism -- then, oh boy, chances are there's probably something wrong with that someone, not the movie.

Rafael Benedicto

As a last note, there's nothing wrong with a "Magical Negro", just like there's nothing wrong with a Magical Asian, or a Magical Hispanic, or Magical Caucasian, or Magical Filipino, or Magical South Pacific Islander, or Magical Australian Aborigine. Morgan Freeman in Bruce Almighty was the most magical negro of them all, yet no one seemed to complain about him.

Aaron Barlow

There is nothing racist about the trope. Now if it was an evil black magic negro trope that might be problematic. People are way too oversensitive to racism these days thanks to Identity politics. They see it where it doesn't exist. Don't listen to the snowflakes and Neo Marxist activists trying to make you think there's a problem, there isn't.

Aaron Barlow

BTW Kim, you look great, your hair looks nice :) (as do all the ladies) It's great to see dawn looking beautiful and healthy as well.

zammmerjammer

LOL. You want to add any more alt-right buzzwords before you demonstrate yet again you have zero grasp of media criticism?

zammmerjammer

Yep, racism is imaginary and only exists inside Black people's heads. Since we've already established you are totally incapable of media criticism, maybe you should refrain from commenting on topics you don't understand?

zammmerjammer

The chorus of kneejerk dismissive, gaslighting, and hostile responses to any Black person offering a critical perspective on ANYTHING is so exhausting and so typical. To anyone who took the opportunity to at least think critically and perhaps examine the criticisms of this movie in particular and the Magical Negro trope in general -- good on you for doing a bit of work to understand a different perspective.

TibrisG

Makes you wonder toxic it would get if someone had a critical thought on the manic pixie dream girl trope.

Anne

I love Big!! Apollo 13 is another great Tom Hanks film :)

Aaron Barlow

Zammerjammer happened.....as usual.

Mario

Have I been living under a rock or something? When did this movie generate so much criticism?

Andrew

Just enquiring in to whether you have a link or download link to your Jurassic Park 1993 reaction,as there does not seem to be one in the description of that movie Thank you

stormakima

Hi everyone! Storm here! Thank you for all of your comments! Most of you are being respectful and expressing your thoughts and opinions. I appreciate that and will read all of them over the weekend. I took on a whole lot more work this summer due to financial struggles, so unfortunately, I don't make time to be here enough. Tom is awesome though and I really appreciate his help! It was brought to my attention there has been some aggression here. I understand people will express themselves strongly, but please stay respectful and debate in a civil manner so people can have a better understanding of different point of views. A lot of us will see things in different ways and we can't change minds overnight, if at all. Please don't throw insults or directly accuse or assume things about people because you are upset about someone's opinion. I'm not pinpointing anyone here right now since I haven't had time to read all the comments yet, but I did read quite a few. I wanted to say something so this doesn't get out of control. We have such a great community, so let's try to educate here in a positive way. If something truly upsets you, respond in a respectful way on why it does, then leave the conversation. If it's harrassment, please let me know through private message and I will look into it and delete comments where needed. We love reacting and enjoy everyone here, so let's stay strong, take care of each other in anyway we can (words from our fans are quite powerful and have mentally helped us through challenging times over the years), so let's have fun enjoying content together! Love you all! xoxo :)

Oh, there was another thing I wanted to mention when I watched this reaction initially. Did you guys recognize the actor who played Arlan Bitterbuck, the Native American man who was the first to be executed? It's Graham Green. He's a great actor who has been in a lot of movies, one of which is Dances With Wolves. I believe I've recommended that film to you guys before, but I can't recall for sure. Just in case I didn't, I will now. Dances With Wolves also has Kevin Costner in it, and he also directed it. It's a long film, but it's brilliantly well done, and worth the length. If and when you do react to it, I suggest you get a hold of the Director's Cut, and make sure you have the subtitles on, as there is a lot of native speaking in it that you need to understand in order to not miss important aspects of the story. Anyway, great reaction to this film, ladies.
