The Flag Smashers mean business and what a leader they have... Karli's followers are truly dedicated to her cause which is so dangerous! We have new appreciation for the new Captain America as well. He is not Steve Rogers and he stated he's not trying to be either. Hopefully our heroes can work together soon!

I'm glad to see that the new Captain America(ish) isn't just some shill doing whatever some creepy politicians tell him to do. It looks like he has a mind of his own, which will add so much more complication to the story. As for the Flag Smashers, I think we still have a ways to go to understand them. From the way this episode went, they could end up being misunderstood heroes who know of some conspiracy our current heroes aren't aware of yet. It wouldn't be surprising if whoever is chasing them has painted them as terrorists to put pressure on them. Not enough info yet, but I'm excited to see which side of things they will fall on.

This episode had a lot of racial themes in it. One which I think went over a lot of people's heads is Isaiah. He was pretty much Captain America back in the 50's but because of his race, he was kept a secret and experimented on. I'm sure they'll go more into this as the show goes on but it goes to show the difference in treatment between him and Steve Rogers just because of his skin color.

yea there was a comic storyline explaining that black soldiers were the first experiments of the super serum. I would like to point out when John said he jumped on a grenade he said he did something with his helmet, so he was already a trained soldier. Steve Rodgers was just a skinny guy who got rejected by the military when he jumped on that grenade, Steve had valor even before the super serum. John is different because he was an athlete, and then a soldier. He is nothing like Steve, that doesn't mean i don't like him, I don't think he truly deserves the shield.

Funny you mentioning Karli and R2D2 at the end there, since Erin Kellyman previously played gang leader/freedom fighter Enfys Nest in Solo. I'm sensing a similar vibe to her character here. 1st time I saw this ep, it really flew by as it was so jam-packed with Easter eggs especially of 80s/90s vintage. I'm keen to see Zemo again as I liked the take on his character in Civil War - no powers, no plans for world domination, just psychological warfare to turn the heroes against each other. Also, I'm really excited to see what they do with the Power Broker.

I love your reactions but I had a totally different read on John Walker. I think he is a good guy deep down, but I felt he came off as entitled to the Captain America mantle. For instance he told Bucky "I did the work" for the Captain America title, but to me that's not a title you work towards that's one that is earned. Also just the phrasing he was using all episode..calling Steve Rogers a "brother" while he never met him, the being overly familiar with Sam and Bucky even though he never met them, then putting Bucky down by calling out his history with the serum and then saying that Sam and Bucky were "Cap's Wingmen" aka sidekicks, then referring to Bucky as an "asset" ...there are so many instances of John Walker kinda demanding that Sam and Bucky fall in line behind him and then when he doesn't get what he wants he turns and threatens them...I think they are setting John Walker up for being the type of guy that falls apart under the pressure and makes bad decisions...and I think Bucky picked up on it when he said "things are really intense for you aren't they."

The police questioned Sam because he...uh looked suspicious.

Yeah, I agree. I think he came off as a little too cocky for what he's been given. I mean, sure, he's a good soldier, but that's not the same thing as being an Avenger. Captain America was more than just the shield (like Sam said), it's about the man, and Steve was Captain America. You can give Walker the shield, but that doesn't make him anything. He's just a good soldier with a shield. He has to earn it, like you said.

OMG, I can't believe that you mentioned my comments in your pre discussion. Thank you so so much. 😘 I have to say, I'm not familiar with the comics. I've only watched the movies. So I have to thank all the comic experts out there on YouTube and Instagram, that give me all the background information. I have to add something about the notebook, that I totally forgot. Hydra used a notebook to control Bucky. They had this little red book with the black sowjet star on it, in which they had written down all useful information about him and more importantly the trigger words, that shuts down his mind and makes him the killer machine. So that's probably the main reason, why Bucky didn't like the notebook thing. As for John Walker there is a lot of subtext in his statements, that shows you, that he's not as nice as he seems at first sight. Like someone else here already mentioned it the statements about Steve being like a brother, calling Bucky an asset as well as him and Sam as wingmen, the orders he gave at the police station, hacking Redwing for information...all that is proof, that he's not trying to be nice and to become friends or just coworkers with them. He uses them as source of information. He didn't even work out the information about the location of the flag smashers in Munich. Just because he hacked Redwing, he knew where they were. And he didn't loosen up Becky's therapy schedule to show an act of kindness. Again he wanted Bucky for information and I'm going this far and say that he loosen it up to get Bucky into trouble. Bucky needs the therapy and if he's not gonna adhere to it strictly, chances are high that he will mess things up. Besides all that, the difference between John Walker and Steve Rogers is pretty obvious. Steve earned to be Captain America because of his heart, not his strength or skills. John Walker was given the shield because of his skills and because he is the perfect soldier, who follows orders. Unlike Steve Walker sees being Captain America as a job and because of all that he will never be the true Captain America. As for therapy session with Bucky and Sam, Bucky's line "If he was wrong about you, then he was wrong about me" hit me so hard, it made me cry. Bucky has so much doubt about himself. He doubts that he's not worth the second chance and furthermore he's not worth to be alive. He's suicidal and I'm a bit mad at Sam for shutting down, when Bucky opened up. He said, that Bucky will never understand the reason for him rejecting the shield and he's right. Bucky ist from the 30s. He was frozen and only woken up to kill people for the past 90 years. Because of that he doesn't understand the problems of being black in America and this therapy session was the perfect time for Sam to tell and explain Bucky his issues with taking the mantle of Steve, but Sam missed it. I hope, they will have a deeper and more personal conversation again, so they come clear about all that. Okay, now I'm finished with my essay. Sorry for this long comment and for possible mistakes. English is not my mother tongue. 😅 Great reaction as always. I can't wait to watch the next episode with you and thanks again for mentioning my comments. It really means a lot to me. PS you should google Battlestar MCU, so that you know, why Bucky got upset about this nickname. 😉

Hah, yeah, even the original comic book storyline had a major racial component throughout. They overtly said in the comics the government passed over Sam as the new Cap because they didn't think people were ready for a black Captain America. Also Nick Fury was too old, however in the comics Nick is a white guy (at least until around 2012 when pretty much the Nick Fury we know from the movies takes over the mantle.)

YodatheHobbit

"Maybe this is something that you, or Steve will never understand. But can you accept that I did what I thought was right?" Yeah, at the beginning of the first episode, I thought Sam not wanting to keep the shield and become the new Cap was about Sam having personal self doubt, but now I'm wondering if it's about him knowing that there's a portion of the US population that no matter how far we've come, no matter how improved race relations might appear, won't accept a black Captain America, which is really sad and would make this show extremely relevant to real world issues. Is it possible Sam thinks "American" unity without a new Cap at all or a scenario he didn't see coming - a new traditional "white guy" Cap which wouldn't get racists upset, is better than some of the US being divided about a race issue? I think Sam has the fear, founded or unfounded, that a portion of an already in turmoil country wouldn't accept Sam as Cap because of his skin color. Maybe Sam is afraid of stirring the pot and it's that fear which he must overcome throughout the course of this show. Sam has to hope for the best and to endure despite the deep seeded, conscious or unconscious racism some like those police officers have.

YodatheHobbit

Yeah, absolutely. John jumped on 4 grenades with his helmet which he knew would be able to absorb/take the impact, Steve jumped on a dummy grenade he thought was real with HIS BODY.

YodatheHobbit

I dunno about John Walker. I'm getting the impression his modesty is false modesty and he's more arrogant than he wants to appear.

I'm a bit unfamiliar with Battlestar myself and I did just that, Googled Battlestar MCU but the only info I found about Battlestar was stuff about him as a character in both the comics and MCU. What did Battlestar mean before the name was giving to Lamar? It is related to the word itself, something Buck's familiar with, or just Bucky being tired of the cheesy superhero sidekick name trope kind of thing?
