Fingers crossed for a reaction to Last Crusade in the near future.

Erasmo

This is my least favorite Indy movie; I hope you guys do Last Crusade soon.

Armchair Wizard

i like this one a lot. its not as good as 1, or 3, but its still a really good movie. The Indy Film i deeply dislike is Crystal Skull.

Daniel R

My favorite one used to be the 3rd one but it switches between 1 and 3 a lot. The worst one for me switches between 2 and 4 a lot depending on my mood lol

Watching the intro to the reaction right now, but I want to give some info on when these movies actually take place. This film, Temple of Doom, is actually a prequel to the first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Raiders takes place in 1936, where this film takes place a year earlier in 1935. The 3rd film, Last Crusade, continues to move forward, taking place in 1938.

You should really just flip the movie so we could see it and you wouldn’t be copyrighted. I’ve seen other patreon users do that and still doing it til today, it just sucks cuz we have to look at the mirror to see.

People LOVE to talk bad about this movie, and I never knew why. Yeah it’s not as great as the first or third, but that doesn’t mean it can be treated like a black sheep. Even Spielberg chooses to ignore this movie, I guess because of how much more violent and darker this movie is, not to mention this and another movie I can’t remember the name of are the main reason the rating “PG-13” exists. Despite what I said, it’s the movie I keep on watching repeatedly more than the rest, it’s really a great time!

Armchair Wizard

No. They get copyrighted even doing THIS. Sometimes it still happens. So this is the best thing for everyone.

Indiana Jones was Spielberg's answer to James Bond so the comparison is apt. Also Willie is played by Kate Capshow who is Spielberg's wife, so you can see why she was inserted into this film.

Really enjoyed the reaction. I already typed a bunch about 'Doom' already, so I'll just add that I too really liked the Indy/Shorty relationship. Unfortunately, it doesn't continue in the movies. (Even in the fourth story, which would've been perfect to re-introduce the relationship in, rather than introducing a whole new character.) I guess that's what fan-fiction is for.

While I quite enjoy this movie, it is my least favorite of the original 3 films. I am so excited for the gals' reaction to Last Crusade, my absolute favorite Indy film, and one of my favorite films overall. Raiders is widely considered the best, but with everything being subjective, I know a few people whose favorite film is this one actually.

Lee Salvemini

Not alone, but the trio of films works so well just because of that. I just found myself watching Temple of Doom around 1:4 odds with Crusade :D Which is just fantastic

Lee Salvemini

Love this reaction! I watched this movie since I was a kid, super nostalgic :D

In a BTS interview for Crystal Skull, George Lucas said he wanted Temple of Doom to be darker than the first because he was going through a bitter divorce at the time so it just bled over into the story. Not sure if he was joking or not, but George and Steven are like buddy-buddy when it comes to Indiana Jones. George is the idea man for Indiana Jones while Steven directs, so if George wants a darker Indiana Jones we're getting a darker Indiana Jones lol

This film was my introduction to Indiana Jones, for some reason it came on TV in the 80's more often than Raiders.

Spielberg and Capshaw met each other when she auditionned for this movie. They only got married in 1991. Spielberg was even married to Amy Irving from 1985 to 1989.

This movie was so dark and violent that in order to sell it to a larger audience than a R rated movie would have in term of distribution, they invented the PG-13 rating. So that teenagers could see it. But what is most disturbing to me in this movie is the over abundance of bad ethnic stereotypes. Really dreadful in my opinion. Add to it Willie Scott character, the depiction of the “white savior” leave a bad taste in my mouth. I can appreciate Steven Spielberg talent and Harrison Ford charm and charisma. For the rest this is a cringeworthy entry in the trilogy. I’ve only seen “crystal skull” once and never feel the need to watch it again.

Yes! Thank you WastedPo! I was reading into some of your comments about this movie! I am so sad to hear Shorty isn't in other movies! I really hoped his character would grow on more Indy adventures... that could've been something grand... like a side kick or protege. Boo. We are enjoying the films though. First movie was my favorite adventure so far, but I loved the Indy/Shorty relationship the most. Thanks for your insight so far! I love reading what you have to say! :)

stormakima

Yay! I'm so happy to hear that! We had fun watching it! I was thinking how nostalgic this must be for many! :D

YodatheHobbit

Yeah, it's strange that at the end we see there are quite a few adult men in the village(who appear to be fathers) and woman likely capable of rescue as well, but only Indiana and gang coming along is what saves the children. The only defense against the "white savior" stereotype in the script I can think of is perhaps the village people are all too afraid of the magic to try to attempt rescue, whereas Indy doesn't have that fear, but I know that's quite a thin stretch of defense.

First of all, that hat looks great on Dawn. The "problematic" Indiana Jones film. The ethnic stereotypes, the white savior trope and the female lead all contribute to a somewhat awkward tone. But there is no faulting the set-pieces, the action and the feeling of falling into a feverish nightmare. Lucas was in a rather dark place in his private life while developing Temple of Doom. He was in a divorce and Spielberg Spielberg had also recently broken up with his girlfriend. Knowing this, the ripping out of hearts in the movie takes on a bit of a different subtext. Despite its problems i really enjoy the dark nightmarish tone of Doom, and it remains my second favourite Indiana Jones film, after Raiders. Skull is third and Crusade is fourth, a ranking i'm pretty alone with. ^^
