This season is definitely the weakest because of what Nickelodeon did to the writers. They gave them two more seasons so books 3 and 4 should feel more connected. But im happy you enjoyed book 2 still. Most people consider book 3 and 4 to be the best of korra so the worst is behind you. See you in book 3!

i would say the spirit episodes in this series, the multi part prequels were amazing.

Just to clear things up, the south never had a chief since the water tribe was still considered to be one. Technically, the south answered to the north and Unalaq was chief of both north and south. That final scene where Korra is making the speech is where the south declares their independence with Tonraq as the south's first chief.

To not get your hopes up for future seasons: yes, Korra's connection to the past Avatars has been cut permanently. So, she won't be able to contact the past Avatars, and she's basically started a new line of Avatars.

I think Korra can still close the portals at will. Wan was able to close it after Harmonic Convergence, I don't see why she couldn't.

The Avatar can open and close the portals only during the summer and winter solstices, which is when the barrier between the spirit and human worlds is at the thinnest. So Korra can close it but only at specific times. The only reason for Harmonic Convergence was to free Vatu as far as we're told and both portals have to be open for that.

So, you bring up a good point about Wan that makes me think the creators made a mistake. The portals can only be opened during the solstices. Which is why Unalaq was racing to get Korra to the southern portal. The reason why Korra was able to open the northern portal was because she did it from the inside, meaning within the spirit realm. However, your point with Wan made me start wondering. Wouldn't he have had to close the portals from the outside along with no convergence or solstice? It kind of feels like the creators missed this one.

The only reason the solstice was needed for the south portal was because the spiritual energy in the south was all but forgotten. Once it was open, spiritual energy returned to the land which means they wouldn’t have to wait for another solstice to be able to close it. Back in Wan’s time, the spiritual energy of the world was even greater so not hard to see why he didn’t need the solstice. The creators didn’t make a mistake
