I thought Amon's tear was one of hope for a new beginning, which makes it all the more sad.

I know this is dark, but that tear that korra dropped when she was looking over the cliff, had serious implications. The reason that was her lowest point was because she didn't believe she was the avatar anymore and that she thought she couldn't keep balance with only one of the three elements. In that moment, korra was thinking about jumping off the cliff and ending it all so that the avatar cycle to go on so someone new could keep balance. Isn't that crazy? Contemplating suicide?! Such a realistic show and I love it.

I agree with Dawn, with Amon's blood-bending he probably sensed what Tarlok was doing and let Tarlok do it anyway. First time I ever saw suicide on a cartoon. Very serious subject matter. Also, Mako and Asami ended their relationship in the previous episode when Mako said "I wish things hadn't got so bad between us," paraphrasing. That was their break up scene. No one who watched it at the time realized it, but they are officially broken up.
