The Seattle Board of Advertising presents "The Art of Advertising: 1910-2020"

January 20 - February 5 - Seattle Public Arts Centre

"Sweet Dreams with Huggies GoodNites"

Mina Kwon, 2012

Step back to the early 2010s with this well-loved Huggies GoodNites advertisement. .

With an art style reminiscent of classic storybook illustrations, Seattle-born Mina Kwon's work on this piece conveys a sense of timelessness and comfort. Her attention to emotional detail and the use of soft, rounded character designs create an inviting and reassuring atmosphere, ideal for the product.

The playful interaction between the characters and the use of space within the composition tell a story beyond the image, a narrative that resonated well with mothers.

This advertisement was praised for its approach to commercial art, where visual storytelling and product messaging intertwine seamlessly. It's no wonder Kwon won the 2013 SBA Award for Upcoming Artist in Advertising.

It was the first of an iconic series that ran for two years, all which underscored Huggies' commitment to a good night's rest for big girls.

As you observe mom and daughter, set against a backdrop of starry night skies and cozy bedroom decor, let yourself be transported to the serene world that Kwon envisioned—one where mommy knows best.

I misread the title as 'Irony Posting'. This lead me to imagine the hipsters of the Alteredstate donning diapers 'ironically', as the least cool thing imaginable. This would presumably have happened long before second childhood became a common phenomenon. If the timelines diverged ca ~1990, many of the girls featured in your work may not even realize how profoundly strange their predicament is. The gradual disappearance of printed media would allow interested parties to fudge the relevant history. "A large percentage of young women have always wet the bed . . .". Once the visible sign ceases to be a tangible sign, memory disappears from the world . . . Maybe this is getting a little too Borgesian.

🤔🤔 interesting thoughts prof alex. but they are ironyposing and perhaps ironyposting their pictures on their social media. often girls who don’t wear diapers (or claim not to) talk about these products like they’re both disgusting and kind of a bit funny. or maybe it’s easier to deal with from a point of ironic detachment.

Ahhhh. I suppose a picture such as that can only be taken with the intention of sharing it. I should have paid closer attention to their facial expressions. Maybe they'll regret taking the photo after it's mistaken for a sincere endorsement and repurposed as fuel for the juggernaut of late stage capitalism.
