(Book 11, The Titan of Baleros, comes out on November 14th!)

[We are running our yearly survey on the site. If you have time, please consider filling it out as it provides useful information and feedback.]

Recap of my break. Most of it was resting or doing management stuff and not writing. Near the end of my longer break, I took time to plan out the Solstice from start to finish. Not perfectly; I don’t write out every scene, but my notes were chronological, and I layed out each major ‘event’ even if I don’t stick to the strict chapter format.

I slept decently well near the start of my writing. I relaxed my mind and stopped writing and got a bit of rest back. Was it perfect? No, but this is all due diligence for a writer preparing for an important writing moment. I even went to the doctor for a checkup and got a tetanus shot!

…The tetanus shot was a mistake. My arm hurt the entire first chapter, and while it’s mostly gone away today, that was not fun to write 6+ hours each day with. Anyways, that’s my recap of the break. I was ready to write the Solstice. Nervous, but I had a plan. How did it go?

As of today, I’ve been editing about an hour, and the chapter is sitting at 33,000 words. I have a list of edits to make after writing on-stream, but I am sure I’d be able to finish the chapter and put it out to my satisfaction more or less by tonight.

However, as the title indicates, I will not be doing this. I realize I promised a chapter back on the 11th. And I can deliver--but it seems to me the best thing for me to do would be to delay posting a chapter until I have backlog of at least 1-3.

I know that’s a lot to ask, but if I write ahead and realize I’ve underdeveloped a scene or moment, I cannot normally go back and fix them. Having a backlog means I can get into the Solstice and make sure everything is even better than my usual standards.

So. I may delay releasing any chapters until next Saturday, even. Perhaps longer if I run into some critical errors.

I have done this for previous volume ends, and my commitment is to the best story possible. I realize this is a long time to wait, and I do, sometimes, value feedback, so I will keep up the streams of chapters on my channel if I write live.

That way I can have a core of people who are willing to watch along with me and provide me with reactions on how I’m doing. I don’t encourage you to read via the streams. I’m just letting you know that to avoid confusion.

It’s been a long wait, but the worst thing to do would be to fail in delivering the Solstice well. This is my update, and I will perhaps post short notes after finishing a chapter even if I don’t release one.

Frankly and honestly--I regard this first one back as acceptable. I didn’t get the sense it was amazing, but it hit every note I wanted (with the edits I am about to do), and I don’t feel like I’ve tripped yet. I will let you know as I head into the next chapters. Thank you for your patience.

I was planning to read all the solstice stuff in one sitting, will it be multiple chapters?

Zack J

Of course I'd like the chapter now but I understand the decision and will make sure I survive until Pirate is ready to start releasing them. =)

Anonymous

If you feel the need for more time to write a better book than take it. It is the same as the game industry. Don't we all complain when they release rushed unfinished messes? Take the time and make it feel right for you

Anonymous

Take all the time you need

Anonymous

Cool, more delays.

Steve

Best would be to release the chapter people have been waiting

Anonymous

I'd much rather wait for a higher quality Solstice than a rushed one that you're not happy with, pirate. Take your time, I'll love it regardless

Anonymous

Makes sense. Taking shots are never fun especially with the after effects on those shots.

John Koor

I'm still confused on why the solstice has become such a massive volume ending event. I understand how it works, but does this mean we're now always going to be dealing with a shorter passage of time during volumes due to the solstice hitting every six months?

Sébastien Kingsbury

On the one hand, sad I'm not getting my wandering inn fix tonight. On the other, quality > speed especially for a moment you've been building up for a while now. Looking forward to it when it's ready!

Alan Williams

i am disappointed i have been waiting, but you are the boss

Jean

You know, I'm on another discord where someone accused pirateaba of "dropping a whole-ass novel every other week." Oh no! So terrible! More seriously: please take whatever time you feel you need to give your best effort. I prefer not needing to reread for corrections.

Aaron Hicks

I have never once been disappointed by your Volume finales (sp?) But if you have been or feel this one demands perfection then, as always, I'll trust you.

Anonymous

I've been deliberately avoiding the streams this time around because I want the best possible solstice experience, so I can relate to the urge to get things right. In other words: take your time, I think that's the right call.

Anonymous

Do what you need to do for the story.

Anonymous

Eh, take all the time you need. I’m good with waiting.

M. Lampi

It's a few weeks until the solstice here, anyway. :-)

Anonymous

Stupid important final arc to the volume Pirate. Take your time and make sure it's what you want!

Glonthein

Pirate you amazing person, you have my blessing. Preparing the Solstice as a whole to make sure every parts align with the others makes perfect sense, so go ahead and do your magic.

Conner Reedy

Do what you need to do to make the story as good as you can, take all the time you need!

ProSailor22

Do what you need to do, just try not to overthink it. That can trip you up just as easily as rushing.

Robrono

100% the correct choice! It's best to make sure everything is in place for this momentous event and nothing is missing. Please don't be afraid to delay again if it needs more time in the oven!

Carvel Williams

I usually read every new chapter in one sitting, which requires planning like wiping out my chores, pop an IPA, kicking my feet up, and watching anime until the new chapter comes out, but hey, I need my fix. The anticipation has been killing me all week.

Bluejay32

Wait and do it right! Take all the time that you need.

Sean Coker

10000% support this decision

Owen Kaz

As I've said before, whether it's next week, next month, or next year, we'll be here waiting Pirateaba. And thank you for taking your time to give us the masterpiece you feel (and we are happy to see) your story deserves

Oliver93

I can wait. Next week I'll have bbq drinks and a chapter. What great weekend

Anonymous

Support the decision! Of course I want it not but I also want it to be good so do your best and take your time!!

Rados

Take all the time you need! Id wait as long as it takes

Anonymous

Take your time. I don’t mind the wait. A quick question, do you plan to release all the written chapters together or will they follow the usual 2 a week schedule?

orange

good idea!

Qahlz

Why do you think it's a "shorter passage of time"? We're on volume 9 and this is the third solstice in the series. The first solstice was during the winter, when Erin got visited in her inn and Ryouka had an Encounter during her run from Riverfarm to Invrisil. The second solstice was during the summer, when Erin was dead and Norechl offed some goblin ghosts, while Ryouka held the Fae party in Riverfarm, and the Blighted King summoned more Earthers. The third solstice is coming up now. Although I do wonder if they'll manage to find some defences during this event that can be used for future solstices.

Kensai

Dropped the patronage. Not enough chapters to warrant the expense. No Side Stories for Oct, and nothing for Nov. yet. With the holiday break on the horizon, soon another wait. The “benefit” of seeing chapters early is lost with delays. Good luck with your arm, hope you feel better.

Oh my god, it’s George R.R. Rothfuss all over again 😂 This is my favorite story, thanks for all you do. Take all the time you need

fdsddfsa

The survey asking me to pick a fav character is violence against me (/s).

David L Ballenger

The solstice arc is major and I think building up a back log of chapters to make sure they work well together is a good idea.

Warren (Stephen) Rose

Take the time. Revising is good. Also, please make an announcement here when the re-recording for the revised Book I audiobook is released.

Anonymous

I get this too. But I figure I read till I caught up at the beginning of this year, and what a year to start, before I became a patron. I've more than gotten my money's worth even with this lean year.

Anonymous

Amazing story, amazing writing - in short amazing. Amazing is worth waiting for hope you do well :)

Anonymous

I’m fine with the delay. I just wish you hadn’t said you’re intentionally holding back :(

Karen Loveridge

I'm very new to the site, and haven't explored most of it. I am in awe of how much content you put out, and you more than earn any break you need to take to recharge batteries and keep your health up. I am beyond thrilled "The Titan of Baleros" is being released so quickly after "The Wind Runner." I pre-order the audiobooks as soon as I'm awe. I didn't realize there would be so much to the site, but so appreciated not having to wait a year between books, I wanted to contribute towards the author being able to write full time. I have been reading some of the newly released chapters and going back to some of the earlier ones. I am looking forward to reviewing more of the site.

Yearly survey is broken on Apple mobile safari. You can’t scroll down the drop list far enough to click your country name. Can’t get off the menu without choosing a country.

Anonymous

All good Aba, take your time. Looking forward to it.

Anonymous

The survey doesn't have a text field for the "other" option so you can't tell what people picking "other" actually would've picked. For example at the question why I didn't buy anything from the store I would've said "My prefered payment option (paypal) does not exist, I don't own a credit card"

Anonymous

I can’t do the survey- using my iPhone. Can’t scroll down to pick where/country. It only gives me options up to Sweden.

Travis Beecher

Do your thing homie. This one's a milestone.

Charles T Martin

That was quite the survey. I hope y'all get some interesting information from it.

Aaron Hicks

Yeah, the favorite author and second favorite author (other than pirateaba that took time and more than a little sweat, no blood, or tears :) Then I finished ... and realized I'd forgotten Drew Hayes ... , but I'm pretty sure I picked 2 of my top 5 for sure.

Gaurav Patil

Tetanus shots are never mistakes unless they are delivered through bullets or cannonballs.
