I wanted to get some feedback on an idea I've been toying with. Basically, I'm thinking of not going with the waifu catalog and instead simply doing the occasional poll with waifus that would be voted on, much like Tifa was. I've been considering it for a bit now, but the waifu catalog isn't meant for the kind of story I'm trying to tell -- mainly, someone that's desperate to get a leg up on life and he's willing to walk over other people if he gets there.

The talents and defenses are just too broken and too cheap to not buy. Dragon Musk especially so. I've been trying to think of ways to either tweak my story or tweak the waifu catalog to make it fit what I want but I've just reached a point that I've realized it would just be simpler to not use it.

What would this mean? Like I said, other waifus would still appear. I'll list off a few -- probably something like two choices for Hero, Rogue, and Villain -- then you would vote and one would be picked. That aspect of the story wouldn't change much.

However, it would mean no Dragon Musk. Thus Vergil not being a dragon.

But an ironic saving grace -- Vergil has a far more dragon-like personality. He hoards wealth, he's more prideful and domineering, and he's ambitious. So, the reason I wrote the rewrite would be intact.

And, lastly, here's another factor -- I'm wanting to crosspost the clean version of this story to SB and SV. Simply put, the waifu catalog won't exactly go over well on those sites.

So, here are the choices:

Stick to the Waifu Catalog -- I go with pretty much the same build as I had before in Be a Dragon.

Don't stick with the Waifu Catalog -- There will be the occasional poll that decides a character to be included. Vergil is not a dragon and his power comes from a unique brand of magic.

Middle ground -- Vergil remains a dragon, but the Catalog is not used. The kind of dragon is undetermined at this point and would be decided by another poll. The choices would be something like a Dragonborn-like nature, or a Dragonslayer-ish transformation, etc.

And, to clarify, no matter what option is picked, I can work with. So pick what you would like to see.

Honestly, I still want him to use a unique magic skill set. If you decide to go the Dragonborn-shout / Soul of a Dragon way of things, it wouldn’t be insanely broke. In DC I’m pretty sure there are only a handful of legitimate Dragons and without them, the Greybeards or Word Walls Vergil will pretty much need to learn it on his own.

Pretty much the same deal with Dragon-Slayer magic, it’s only really badass when you’ve had it for a while (like literal years) when it’s had the chance to really seep into your body and enhance your strength, Durability, etc.

Pretty much every Dragon related power in fiction (that I can think of) takes time to grow into and master. At least when you ignore the inherit OPness of the Waifu Catalog gives to its protag.

I am sure we’ll love the story no matter what, and I am sorry to everyone for my rant

I got into your stories because of the wish fulfilment power fantasy so I’m all for sticking with the catalogue.

The Catalogue is completely inessential to the story in my opinion. Any benefits from it can be gained by making up your own CYOA, or hand waving it as an ASB, as is tradition. Tell the story you want to tell, and if that means dropping the Catalogue, I'm all for it.

So if you are writing this story as a means of exploring the DC universe from the villain's perspective, then the catalogue is not only unnecessary, but an active detriment. I'll go one step further and say that including "waifus" is also unneeded and a distraction from the narrative. Introducing crossover character is likewise extraneous to that story. If, however, this is a wish fulfillment power fantasy, then by all means include them. I'd also say that you want to make sure to include a sense of constant progress and a swift rise to infamy, though once the character is known enough to be respected and feared by mooks you can slow that rise for better pacing. Make sure to include a least one lewd scene per slave, but I'd only focus your character efforts on a small number. The rest can just stay in the background until you need their specific skills for something.

Do what you find most interesting/fun to write. I mostly care about a good read, not how I get it. So if you're having fun and blasting out meaty chapters that's all that really matters. Let your muse guide you, and we'll all probably enjoy it more in the end.

As much as I like the various powers from the Catalog (Faerie Feast, Lovespot, etc) I don’t think they are completely necessary for the story you want to tell. I was interested in seeing the powers themselves becoming plot points brought up in the last story, but with the new changes to the story they aren’t necessary. Especially if you want to cross post. However, I do like the concept of a dragon MC, so I’ll probably vote middle ground. Either way, you should write the one you like the most, as chances are that’s the one we will enjoy the most. A story that’s enjoyable to write is usually better than one that’s a slog after all.
