Lore Raziel city: Garbage dump (part 2) (Patreon)

One of the reasons why Raziel is the largest city in extent is because of this area that surrounds much of the city and expands indefinitely for miles. Although for legal purposes it is part of Raziel's city jurisprudence, in practice, this area is mostly managed by its own citizens. In general, both areas are reluctant to deal with and meddle in each other's business. For the citizens of the center, the garbage dump is an area they're ashamed of and don't usually talk about. For the dumpster residents, the big city of skyscrapers has forgotten them and treats them as if they were an evil that they're forced to endure.

Although the Garbage Dump was initially an accumulation of centuries and centuries of waste, over time it became a place of opportunity for people of lesser means. Over the years the business of collecting materials became so lucrative that it became highly specialized. There are those who take it upon themselves to act as collectors by collecting abandoned materials even in areas far away from the dump, as well as appraisers, ginners and some incredible engineers capable of creating fascinating inventions out of scrap metal.

One of the most curious things about the landfill is that despite its disorderly appearance characterized by small shacks next to mountains of garbage, it hides one of the most orderly and structured areas. The Raziel dump is divided into districts in which different elements are treated; one area for liquid waste, another for electronic components, another for organic compounds, etc. and within each district the levels of specialization can be perfected to the point that there are areas in which only a very specific resistance for household appliances or a transmission belt of a unique car engine on the market are treated.

Over time, the garbage dump has developed a system similar to tribalism, where each of its constituent regions defends its area and its development activity tooth and nail. Despite the unfair competition and the obvious health risks due to the lack of sanitation, the average citizen of the garbage dump is characterized by a normal life expectancy, a low or very low financial capacity and a very low literacy rate. From a very young age, children are put to work in some task, and this, together with the fact that there are no schools, means that only 1 out of every 25, obtains a primary education. On the other hand, it's very difficult to get out of this environment, so many young people desperate to live in the city are captured by mafias. Despite the obvious problems, this region is characterized by a lower crime rate than the city, where the most popular crimes are petty thefts and fights that tend not to go much further. Likewise, the police have long avoided setting foot in this area on a deliberate basis. The inhabitants of the Garbage Dump prefer to manage their affairs on their own, and even have their own customs and festivities independent of those of the city.

If the two regions haven't separated, it's simply for the sake of convenience. The city has a sense of ownership over the area, especially when it's now proportionally larger than the city itself. Apart from the fact that the work of collection and recycling has benefited its own environment both economically and ecologically. The autonomous form of management means that, on top of that, they don't have to worry in any way about this area. Raziel provides the garbage dump with a way of life, as well as an umbrella of protection from other areas.

Una de las razones por la que Raziel es la ciudad más grande en extensión es debido a esta área que rodea gran parte de la ciudad y se expande indefinidamente durante kilómetros. Aunque a efectos legales es parte de la jurisprudencia de la ciudad de Raziel, en la práctica, este área es mayormente gestionada por sus propios ciudadanos. En general, ambas zonas se muestran reticentes a tratar e inmiscuirse en los asuntos de la otra. Para los ciudadanos del centro, el basurero es un área que les produce  vergüenza y de la que no suelen hablar. Para los habitantes del basurero, la gran urbe de rascacielos los ha olvidado y los trata como si fueran un mal que están obligados a soportar.

Pese a que el Basurero inicialmente fue una acumulación de siglos y siglos de desperdicios, con el tiempo se convirtió en un lugar de oportunidades para las personas de menores recursos. Con los años el negocio de la recogida de materiales se volvió tan lucrativo hasta el punto de volverse tremendamente especializado. Hay quienes se encargan de hacer las veces de recolectores consiguiendo materiales abandonados incluso en áreas muy alejadas al basurero, también hay tasadores, desmotadores y algunos increíbles ingenieros capaces de crear fascinantes inventos con chatarra.

Una de las cosas más curiosas del basurero, es que pese a su apariencia desordenada caracterizada por chabolas de pequeño tamaño junto a montañas de basura, se esconde una de las zonas  más ordenadas y estructuradas. El basurero de Raziel está dividido en distritos en los que se tratan diferentes elementos; Una zona para los residuos líquidos, otra para los componentes electrónicos, otra para los compuestos orgánicos, etc. y dentro de cada distrito los niveles de especialización se puede perfeccionar hasta el punto de haber zonas en las que solo se tratan con una muy concreta resistencia para electrodomésticos o una correa de trasmisión de un motor de coche único en el mercado.

Con el tiempo, el basurero ha desarrollado un sistema similar al tribalismo, donde cada una de las regiones que lo componen defiende su área y su actividad de desarrollo con uñas y dientes. Pese a la competencia desleal y los evidentes riesgos sanitarios debido a la falta de salubridad, el ciudadano promedio del basurero se caracteriza por tener una esperanza de vida normal, una baja o muy baja capacidad financiera y una muy baja tasa de alfabetización. Desde muy jóvenes, los niños se ponen a trabajar en alguna tarea, eso, junto al hecho de que no existen escuelas, hace que solo 1 de cada 25, obtenga sus estudios primarios. Por otra parte, es muy difícil salir de este entorno, por lo que muchos jóvenes desesperados por vivir en la ciudad son captados por mafias. A pesar de los evidentes problemas, esta región se caracteriza por tener un menor índice de delincuencia que la ciudad, donde los delitos más populares son pequeños robos y peleas que no suelen tener mayor recorrido. Igualmente, hace tiempo que la policía evita pisar este área de forma deliberada. Los habitantes del Basurero prefieren gestionar sus asuntos por su propia cuenta, incluso, poseen sus propias costumbres y festividades independientes a la de la ciudad.

Si ambas regiones no se han separado es por simple conveniencia. La ciudad tiene un sentimiento de pertenencia sobre el área, sobre todo, cuando ahora es proporcionalmente más grande que la propia urbe. Aparte de que el trabajo de recolección y reciclaje ha beneficiado a su propio entorno tanto económicamente, como ecológicamente. La forma autónoma de gestión, hace, que encima, no deban preocuparse en ningún sentido por esta zona. Al Basurero, Raziel le proporciona su forma de vida, así como un paraguas de protección frente a otras áreas.
