Lore: Names (part 1) (Patreon)

The names of CHR characters are often related to mythology or references. Even if the main characters have many curious and interesting things about their past and present hidden in their names (Joe, Maske, etc...) today we would like to make an entry focusing on some of our most important secondary characters.

Angels and demons

The names of supernaturals generally end in '-el'. All angels share this kind of name because it's the one assigned to them on their plane of origin. '-El' means 'belonging to God' in Enochian. It's a mark of ownership as well as commitment. Although it's not uncommon for them to use abbreviations to better identify themselves among their fellow angels.

Angels don't take kindly to other races (human or demon) using such names, but they don't usually express this openly.Many demons change their name when they fall, but many others do not, out of mere habit or attachment or, as a warning.  Demons like to remind their enemies that they were once like them.

Names in the supernatural world aren't permanent; they designate functions and ranks. For example, archangels and archons are names that pass from supernatural to supernatural after their demise or descent. Perpetuating legends about incredible and heroic figures that were realised at different times and starred different generations of supernaturals.

The way in which they choose to designate themselves is related to the function for which they were created, and if they don't fulfil that role, they're relegated to another member who can take on that role, inheriting their name with it. It's seen as a dishonour to lose your name, because it's a way of assuming that you aren't capable of fulfilling the task for which you were created.

• Nova

The literal meaning of this name is 'dead star'. A trait that is quite distinctive in this character. Nova sees himself as an achiever, a person with high aspirations, frustrated by an organisation that values neither his talent nor his efforts, often rewarding others he considers inferior. During the second arc, he is shown as Pin's antagonist who exemplifies everything he finds detestable.

In the third arc, he takes on a new meaning. For his ascension in the Blood Brotherhood means that his light is extinguished entirely, to see a stronger star born in its place.

• Eris

She's named after the Greek goddess of discord. Although within the Brotherhood of Blood she represents order and discipline, she is nonetheless Valefar's greatest ally. All her purposes are linked to those of the Church itself and she brings chaos and conflict wherever she goes. It's openly hostile to anyone who opposes her way of thinking and her goals, and to this end it doesn't hesitate to use any method, however cruel and ruthless it may be.

• Doughy

Doughy's name is pronounced as 'Dewey'. This is because his parents misspelled it in the register. From a young age Doughy grew up in a simple environment, where things were simple and the talent that most defined him was his own strength. But after an accident in the special forces Doughy ended up as the broken toy of an organisation on the verge of extinction.

• Jace

We thought of the name of this character as that of a flower.We like classic names like Jacinto, but we wanted to make it more stylised.  The translation was complex and changed a lot, so we looked for something that had a sonority that reminded us of it. Jace has a pleasant personality and good manners, but out of propriety, he is incapable of handling big problems, or making complex decisions. For Akane Jace was an easy way out of a complicated situation, but when the going got really tough he was unable to rise to the occasion.

• Caleb

This name was given by Hanael himself and means 'dog of God'. It's quite obvious how Hana sees this character. Even if he is only a child, Caleb has the function of a mere tool. That's what he has been raised to be and so his loyalty is clearly marked.

• Amanita

The name of this endearing old woman is that of a mushroom that's very characteristic for its red colour and white speckles, but also for being extremely poisonous. We see Amanita as an endearing and sickly old woman, but with a strong and disciplined character. Far from seeing her as dangerous, we like to see her as a wise old mushroom lady, more reminiscent of classic fairy tale characters.

Los nombres de los personajes de CHR suelen estar vinculados a la mitología o a referencias. Aún si los personajes principales tienen muchas cosas curiosas e interesantes sobre su pasado y su presente escondidas en sus nombres (Joe, Maske, etc…) hoy nos gustaría hacer una entrada centrándonos en algunos de nuestros personajes secundarios más importantes.

Angeles y demonios

Los nombres de los sobrenaturales, generalmente, terminan en ‘-el’. Todos los ángeles comparten esta clase de nombres porque son los asignados en su plano de origen. ‘-El’ significa ‘perteneciente a Dios’ en enoquiano. Es una marca de propiedad, a la par que de compromiso. Aunque no es raro que usen abreviaturas para diferenciarse mejor entre sus congéneres.

Los ángeles no ven con buenos ojos, que otras razas (humanos o demonios) usen esta clase de nombres, pero no suelen expresarlo abiertamente. Muchos demonios cambian su nombre al caer, pero muchos otros no lo hacen, ya sea por mera costumbre o apego o, como advertencia. A los demonios les gusta recordar a sus enemigos que una vez fueron como ellos.

Los nombres, en el mundo sobrenatural, no son permanentes, designan funciones y rangos. Por ejemplo, los arcángeles y los arcontes son nombres que van pasando de sobrenatural en sobrenatural después de su fallecimiento o descenso. Perpetuando leyendas sobre increíbles y heroicas figuras que fueron realizadas en diferentes épocas y protagonizadas por diferentes generaciones de sobrenaturales.

La forma en la que deciden designarse, está ligada a la función para la que fueron creados, y de no cumplir con dicho puesto, son relegados por otro miembro que pueda tomar ese rol, heredando con él su nombre. Se ve como una deshonra el perder tu nombre, porque es una forma de asumir que no eres capaz de cumplir con la tarea para la que fuiste creado.

• Nova

El significado literal de este nombre es ‘estrella muerta’. Rasgo que es bastante característico en este personaje. Nova se ve así mismo como un triunfador, una persona con altas aspiraciones, frustrado por una organización que no valora ni su talento, ni sus esfuerzos, a menudo, premiando a otros que considera inferiores. Durante el segundo arco se muestra como un antagonista de Pin que ejemplariza todo lo que él cree detestable.

En el tercer arco, toma un nuevo significado. Pues su ascenso en la Hermandad de Sangre significa que su luz se apaga totalmente, para ver nacer una estrella más fuerte en su lugar.

• Eris

Su nombre es el de la diosa griega de la discordia. Aunque dentro de la Hermandad de Sangre representa el orden y la disciplina, no deja de ser la mayor aliada de Valefar. Todos sus propósitos están vinculados a los de la propia Iglesia y sembrar el caos y el conflicto allá por dónde va. Es abiertamente hostil con todo aquel que se enfrente a su forma de pensar y a sus metas y para ello no duda en usar cualquier método, por cruel y despiadado que sea.

• Doughy

El nombre de Doughy se pronuncia como ‘Dewey’. Esto es debido a que sus padres lo escribieron mal en el registro. Desde pequeño Doughy creció en un ambiente simple, donde las cosas eran sencillas y el talento que más les definía era su propia fuerza. Pero después de un accidente en las fuerzas especiales Doughy acabó siendo el juguete roto de una organización al borde de la extinción.

• Jace

Pensamos en el nombre de este personaje como el de una flor. Nos gustan los nombres clásicos como Jaciento, pero queríamos hacerlo más estilizado. La traducción era compleja y cambiaba bastante, así que buscamos algo que tuviese una sonoridad que nos lo recordase. Jace tiene una personalidad agradable y buenos modales, pero fuera de su corrección, es incapaz de gestionar problemas grandes, ni de tomar decisiones complejas. Para Akane Jace fue una salida fácil de una situación complicada, pero cuando las cosas se volvieron realmente difíciles él no fue capaz de estar a la altura.

• Caleb

Este nombre lo puso el propio Hanael y significa ‘perro de Dios’. Es bastante obvio cómo ve Hana a este personaje. Aún si es solo un niño, Caleb tiene la función de una mera herramienta. Para eso ha sido educado y por eso su lealtad está claramente marcada.

• Amanita

El nombre de esta entrañable anciana es la de una seta muy característica por su color rojo y sus motas blancas, pero también por ser extremadamente venenosa. Vemos a Amanita como una anciana entrañable y enferma, pero con un carácter fuerte y disciplinado. Lejos de verla como alguien peligroso, nos gusta verla como una sabia anciana de las setas, más parecida a los personajes de cuentos de hadas clásicos.
