Chapter 49

Karu Lan stood outside the door in silence for a while before gathering the courage to knock, "Is the Third Prince in?"

She hesitated to address him as 'Third Brother' this time.

Ling Chunann released the man's arm, gesturing for him to open the door.

Reluctantly, the imposing figure of the Dragon pulled away from Ling Chunann and strode to the door, towering over the anxious young girl. "What is it?" he asked, peering down at her.

Karu Lan shuddered slightly, clearly not expecting someone else in the room. She seemed momentarily taken aback, but finally managed to speak, "I'm looking for the Third Prince. The shopkeeper said he's in this room."

"He's not here," the Dragon said coldly, about to close the door.

Karu Lan suddenly reached out and pressed her hand against the door, her eyes betraying panic. "I really need to see him urgently. Please, let me in."

If it were any ordinary man, witnessing such a pleading expression from a beautiful woman would likely soften his heart. But the Dragon was evidently not an ordinary man. With a slight tremor in his hand, he mercilessly slammed the door shut during the brief moment when the girl's hand trembled, swiftly locking it.

"Host, is this okay? What if she really has urgent matters to discuss with you? After all, this princess is also one of the main characters in the plot, a significant figure," 098 interjected.

"She'll manage," the Dragon replied as he returned, continuing his interrupted meal.

As expected, there was a brief silence outside, followed by Karu Lan's voice once more.

"Third Brother, I'm sorry. I know you're inside. I know I was wrong, and I know I have no face to call you Third Brother anymore.

"I don't know why I was so obsessed with being with that man, but you were right. He's not a good person." Karu Lan's voice choked up at this point, then she continued, "I sneaked out because I wanted to warn you about Rod. He doesn't intend to wait three months before making a move against you. He's hired people to attack you on your way back."

"I'm sorry, I have to go now."

"Host, this male lead is too much!" 098 exclaimed indignantly. "You haven't provoked him, why does he keep trying to cause trouble for you?"

"The male lead has a small mind. He thought I was dead before, so he didn't pursue it further. But now that I've reappeared before him, naturally, he's not pleased," Ling Chunann explained cheerfully. "But I don't think he'll take action. After all, there are still several students from the Imperial Academy with me. The male lead cares about his reputation and wouldn't dare to act recklessly."

"Are you saying the princess gave you false information?" 098 asked, puzzled.

"No, she didn't lie."

Even more puzzled, 098 was about to ask again when he heard the Dragon's voice.

"Darling, did that kid just now call himself Rod?"

"Um?"

"I'm going to kill him."

"..."

Although the direct death of the male lead would be a form of ultimate retribution, Ling Chunann clearly didn't want to let him off that easily. He immediately grabbed the eager Dragon who was ready to act, "I have a plan."

"But he bullied you," the Dragon persisted.

"I'll handle him personally." Ling Chunann pushed him onto the bed, his expression stern. "Sleep."

Afraid of angering his beloved, the Dragon obediently lay down, his eyes fixed on Ling Chunann.

Karu Lan hurried back to her lodging, barely making it inside before hearing Rod's cold voice, "Where have you been?"

"I... I..." Karu Lan's face turned pale, a hint of guilt flashing in her eyes, but she quickly composed herself. "I went out for a walk."

"I think you went to tattle," Rod sneered, his companions glaring at Karu Lan with hostility.

"I didn't," Karu Lan said, a bit flustered.

"Hehe." Rod's face was full of coldness. "When I saw Karu Lanter appear today, I thought, maybe you're the spy he placed beside me. I just tested you a little, didn't expect you to expose yourself so soon, tsk tsk."

"You!" Karu Lan was shocked. She never expected this man to be so despicable. She had betrayed her own dearest brother for him, pushed him towards death with her own hands, and yet this man suspected her over such trivial matters.

"Do you think I'm stupid enough to hastily attack him on the road? Huh, how foolish," Rod sneered. "There are countless accidental deaths in the academy competition. Why would I be in such a hurry?"

Karu Lan turned pale, ready to turn and leave, but she was held back by Rod's companions. She tried to cast a spell but was horrified to find her magic empty, vanished without a trace. She looked at Rod, demanding, "What did you do?"

"Nothing much, just making sure you obediently follow me." With her identity as the princess's sweetheart still useful to him, Rod naturally wouldn't give up. He said to his companions, "Take her to rest."

Perhaps there was a prior agreement, and fearing to break it, the Dragon, anxious not to disappoint, only held Ling Chunann without doing anything out of line.

In the middle of the night, the Dragon quietly opened his eyes, seeing Ling Chunann sleeping soundly. He gently withdrew his hand from hers, silently got out of bed, and left the room.

Just as 098 was about to remind his host, he noticed Ling Chunann was already awake, "Host, what is he going out for?"

"To beat someone up," Ling Chunann replied, "Nothing will go wrong." With that, he closed his eyes and turned over to continue sleeping.

Less than half an hour later, the door was pushed open again, and the Dragon stood by the bed, taking off his coat before slipping back under the covers.

He carefully embraced Ling Chunann, kissed him on the corner of his eye, then closed his eyes.

Ling Chunann opened his eyes, wrinkling his nose, hesitated for a moment, but decided not to kick the person out.

The next morning, Bru Nant knocked on the door early, seeing Ling Chunann looking excited, "Third Prince, do you know? Last night, Rod was beaten up by someone, and even the healing magic of the Light Magicians couldn't help him. He's currently seeking medical treatment at the clinic."

Early in the morning, Bru Nant left the inn to buy breakfast for a few people. Coincidentally, he noticed a crowd gathering outside the clinic. Normally not one to join in on such spectacles, he instinctively peered over when he spotted a woman who had been with Rod yesterday. To his surprise, he saw Rod, who had been full of confidence yesterday, now lying on the ground in agony, with a healer using Light Magic trying to mend his wounds. Astonishingly, even the healing magic, known for its effectiveness on injuries, showed no effect on Rod's wounds.

The healer, refusing to believe this, attempted several more spells, but to no avail. Finally, he had to concede that the wounds on this man couldn't be healed by magic.

Bru Nant vividly described Rod's cries of pain, then, noticing Ling Chunann watching him, he blushed slightly and cleared his throat. "So, now the pharmacist from the drugstore is using herbs to bandage his wounds."

It was quite clear who was responsible for Rod's current condition. However, as Bru Nant explained, the Dragon had gone out almost midnight yesterday, and according to his account, Rod was only taken to the clinic this morning. Clearly, during this time, he had been lying in his own room, and as the saying goes, when one calls out to the heavens and the earth, there may not always be a response.

Brutal.

Ling Chunann cast a look of admiration towards the Dragon, who grinned foolishly upon being caught red-handed.

Not interested in observing Rod's plight any longer, Ling Chunann decided to set off immediately back to the academy.

"Host, aren't you concerned about Princess Karu Lan?" 098 suddenly remembered the conscientious girl.

"She's fine. Why should I bother about her?" Ling Chunann retorted, then added, "I hope her intelligence improves by the next time we meet."

Compared to the leisurely journey of Ling Chunann's group, Rod's current situation was much more pitiful.

Last night, he was inexplicably attacked by someone, and it seemed that the person's fists carried a special force, as if each blow struck directly at his organs and marrow. He didn't shed a drop of blood, yet the pain was unbearable, rendering him unable to utter a single word. He hadn't even seen the attacker's figure or appearance from beginning to end.

Initially, he suspected it was the Third Prince's doing. However, the Third Prince was a mage, and there was no way he would strike so heavily. Not to mention, his level as a mage was lower than Rod's, who was proficient in both magic and swordsmanship. With Rod's current levels at six in both magic and swordsmanship, he could guarantee that no one around the Third Prince, including himself, exceeded level eight. Thus, he quickly ruled out Ling Chunann as the culprit, leaving him even more puzzled—whom had he offended?

Hearing that Rod had been beaten, and that healing magic was ineffective, possibly taking two to three months to recover, Karu Lan smirked. The elder sister among the siblings seemed to want to say something, but remembering the other's status as a princess, she simply put down the food in her hand. "Eat something."

On the wide official road, two carriages pulled by odd beasts moved steadily. Ling Chunann lay asleep on the Dragon's chest, while the man's hand sporadically caressed his back, ensuring his peaceful sleep.

Bru Nant, alert and focused, steered the carriage, his expression serious. The Third Prince had promised to appoint him as a member of the guard upon returning, which was undoubtedly a great honor for him, born a commoner. However, he was still only a third-level swordsman at the moment and needed to perform better. What if the Third Prince regretted his decision?

However, just then, a ragged, disheveled child suddenly darted out from the nearby bushes, on the verge of being trampled by the odd beasts' hooves.

Bru Nant instinctively pulled on the reins.

The violent jolt abruptly woke Ling Chunann, who looked a bit dazed. "What's going on?"
