Chapter 29
As the evening approached, the Chunming Orphanage was about to receive an important guest. The director, Xiao Yuanlang, stood at the entrance with a few caregivers, waiting anxiously.
"Director, who on earth is coming to our orphanage so late?" a young caregiver asked, sounding a bit displeased. They were just about to finish work when they were notified to stay, and they were curious about the commotion. "Who warrants such a grand reception?"
The director, somewhat anxious, replied, "Shh, save those questions for later. Show some respect when they arrive. If we upset the big boss, we might lose our bonuses for the month."
Just as everyone was about to inquire further, a black car pulled up in front of them. A sturdy man got out of the car, exuding an elite demeanor. He expressionlessly glanced at the waiting crowd. The director, eager to welcome him, saw the man walk to the back of the car and respectfully open the door.
"Mr. Xiao, Mrs. Xiao, Mr. Qin, welcome to Chunming Orphanage," he announced as the man and an elegant middle-aged woman emerged from the car.
The caregivers, who had some lingering resentment due to overtime, rubbed their eyes in disbelief. Weren't these the famous couple entrepreneurs in Haicheng in recent years?
No wonder the director was so prepared; the Xiao family's influence in Haicheng ranked in the top ten. Were they here to adopt a child?
Due to health reasons, the Xiao couple couldn't have children and had been working on adoption for the past few months. With some free time after a meeting today, they contacted the orphanage.
"Chengyuan, would you like to join us inside?" Mrs. Xiao smiled and gestured towards the car.
Duan Chengyuan remained noncommittal and followed the woman out of the car. The director hurriedly greeted them, "Mr. Xiao, Mrs. Xiao, good evening." He then turned his attention to the unfamiliar young man beside them, visibly intimidated by the cold gaze he received.
"This is my brother, surnamed Duan. He came along to see today," Mrs. Xiao introduced with a smile, though there was a hint of reverence in her eyes as she looked at the young man.
"Hello, Mr. Duan," the director quickly added.
As the man who got out of the car received a call, he checked the caller ID and gestured an apology to the group before answering. When he returned, his expression was somewhat grim. He whispered something to Mrs. Xiao and then apologized to the orphanage staff, "I'm sorry, there's an urgent matter at the company. Let's reschedule. Chen Director, I'll transfer the sponsorship funds to your account tomorrow. I apologize for any inconvenience."
"Chengyuan, I'm sorry for making you come along for nothing. Would you like to go to the company with us, or should we drop you home first?" Mrs. Xiao seemed uneasy about her brother.
Duan Chengyuan glanced at the orphanage, furrowing his brows slightly. He wasn't particularly fond of children, but when his long-lost sister suggested adopting a child, he impulsively agreed to accompany them to take a look.
He felt as if something was waiting for him here. "You go ahead; I'll check it out."
Understanding that she couldn't change Duan Chengyuan's mind, Mrs. Xiao smiled at him, exchanged a few more polite words, and left with the man.
"Take me inside," Duan Chengyuan said, looking at the people eagerly watching him. "I'll go alone."
Perhaps accustomed to giving orders, Duan Chengyuan's voice carried an unquestionable authority, making everyone instinctively follow his words.
Soon, only the director and Duan Chengyuan remained. After a tour of the orphanage and seeing a bunch of hopeful children, Duan Chengyuan's frown deepened. No, it wasn't any of them.
The director, nervously walking, cautiously asked, "Mr. Duan, is there something specific you are looking for?"
"Hmm?" Duan Chengyuan snapped out of his thoughts, a hint of confusion in his eyes. He didn't know what he was looking for, but he couldn't help asking, "Are these all the children in your orphanage?"
"Yes," Director Chen quickly replied with a smile. "If Mr. Duan is interested in any of them, you can start the paperwork tomorrow."
However, Duan Chengyuan's gaze suddenly fell on a small door in the corner of the yard. His heart tightened, and he walked briskly towards it.
"Host, host?"
Since Ling Chunann mentioned that he was hungry, he remained motionless, and 098 became increasingly worried. No matter how it called out, there was no response, and even Ling Chunann's breathing was barely audible.
After what felt like a long time or perhaps just a moment, Ling Chunann finally moved. Before 098 could feel relief, he witnessed Ling Chunann crazily biting towards his own arm.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
A strong impact echoed from outside the door, and with a loud sound, the door was forcefully opened from the outside.
Outside the door stood a tall figure, obscured by the darkness, making it difficult to discern his features.
Detecting the bloody scent in the room, Duan Chengyuan felt a sharp pain in his heart. He swiftly crossed the room to the small figure curled up inside, gripping the arm that was being bitten. At the same time, he offered his own arm.
The director was stunned. He hadn't expected another child here, and what surprised him even more was that this child was biting him?
And this prominent figure was willingly putting his arm in the child's mouth. Watching the man's arm being gnawed to the point of flesh and blood, Director Chen stammered, "Mr. Duan, Mr. Duan, do you need to go to the infirmary to get your arm bandaged? This child..."
"I've adopted this child. Tomorrow, I'll send someone to handle the paperwork." Duan Chengyuan, indifferent to the wound on his arm, lifted the unconscious Ling Chunann and continued to feed his arm into his mouth. "Who locked him up here, Director Chen, you better explain it to me tomorrow."
When Ling Chunann woke up, he was still a bit confused. "098, I seem to have seen Chu Yunge."
"Host, it's not Chu Yunge," 098, still frightened, recited the information to Ling Chunann. "The person who came last night is called Duan Chengyuan, the brother of Mrs. Xiao, who adopted you in the original plot. He is also the current head of the largest underworld family in Country A."
Ling Chunann acknowledged and added, "098, why are you scared? I won't bite myself. I want to live, not die."
"Yes, Host, it was my oversight," 098 apologized obediently, thinking that the Host had someone watching over him.
"What's the mission?" Ling Chunann asked again.
"Host, due to a time coordinate error, I haven't received mission requirements yet," 098 replied.
Without further conversation with 098, Ling Chunann slowly sat up. The bed was large and soft, the room had a typical European style, and his arm wound and bruised areas had been treated, likely by the person who brought him back.
At that moment, the door opened, and a cold-faced, handsome young man in his twenties entered. When he noticed Ling Chunann looking at him, his cold demeanor instantly melted, replaced by gentleness. "Darling, you're awake."
Hearing the familiar address, Ling Chunann's heart trembled. He suddenly remembered the familiar scent from last night. "098, what's going on with him?"
"Just as you think," confirmed 098, who had checked the fluctuations in Ling Chunann's soul.
Seeing that the little one on the bed ignored him and only stared at his face, Duan Chengyuan's smile deepened. He approached, picked up the little one, and asked, "Do I look good?"
Unexpectedly, this guy was so self-absorbed. Ling Chunann noticed a subtle difference between him and Chu Yunge.
"Don't be afraid, baby." Duan Chengyuan touched the little one's small face with concern, "I've adopted you. From now on, I'm your daddy. When you're with daddy, no one can bully you. Come on, baby, say, 'Dad~dy~'"
Watching the man trying hard to play the role of a dad, Ling Chunann thought, "I've decided to be a good introverted child."
"098," he continued, "you're afraid, why? I won't bite myself. I want to live."
"Yes, Host, I was overly concerned." 098 apologized.
"What's the mission?" Ling Chunann asked again.
"Host, you can speak now. Why don't you call him?" 098 was puzzled.
"I'm afraid if I call him, he'll be persistent." Ling Chunann played with the toys the man had collected for him and said to 098, "I'm still little." He pushed the toys aside, glanced at the man, and added, "Besides, he looks silly now."
"..." The Host made a reasonable point. Thinking of Ling Chunann calling someone 'uncle' for the first mission and 'brother' for the second, and the different reactions of Wu Noyue and Chu Yunge, 098 couldn't help but agree. However, in front of others, this man still had an imposing presence, but in front of the Host... looking at the man smiling like a weird uncle, 098 nodded; indeed, a bit silly.
