Without a doubt, Matthew chose to continue to be friendly.

The advantage of having a high affinity with nature was clear. Wherever he went, he could potentially have an intimate encounter with the local spirits of nature.

The Rainforest Spirit was also a spirit of nature, unlike Ella, who had an individual existence and will. It was a collective consciousness formed by the billions of creatures in the rainforest.

If he could successfully please it, then Matthew's journey in the rainforest would be much smoother.

However, the current situation didn't look very optimistic. Ella had told him that the Rainforest Spirit was particularly irritable and fierce. Matthew could feel this as well. Getting along with such a spirit of nature was not a simple task.

After confirming this, a light green progress bar appeared before his eyes.

The communication was progressing very slowly.

It wasn't until Old Gito led the two of them to the resting place for the night, a cave on a cliff outside the rainforest, that this thing had barely reached one percent.

"The Rainforest Spirit is not easy to deal with. It is very wary of outsiders. According to the current progress, it will take at least a few weeks to open up to it," Matthew contemplated whether there was a way to accelerate communication.

At this moment, Loran and Old Gito had already prepared their sleeping arrangements, and they began to debate who would take the night watch.

"Of course, I should take the night watch! I'm young, strong, full of energy, alert, and quick in my reactions. Isn't that the ideal choice for a natural night watchman?" Loran declared.

"With me around, no one can cause trouble!" Old Gito responded.

Loran spoke casually, "You two can get a good night's sleep first, especially you, Old Gito. You're older, and once we're in the rainforest, we'll need you to be in good spirits to lead the way!"

Old Gito silently took out some tobacco and began to prepare a pipe. Shaking his head, he said, "I'll take the second half of the night, and Matthew will take the first half. There's no room for negotiation. Once we're on the road, you'll have to follow my lead."

Loran seemed to feel slighted and said with a hint of dissatisfaction, "Old Gito, are you discriminating against bards? I should have a role to play too!"

After thinking for a while, Old Gito finally said, "How about you play the flute for everyone?"

Surprisingly, Loran readily agreed. He produced a dark green flute as if by magic and was about to start playing it. Old Gito quickly stopped him, "Hold on! Playing the flute here, do you want to attract Skyward Griffins or the Jackal-kin tribe from the rainforest?"

After saying that, he looked at Loran, who had a puzzled expression on his face, and sighed heavily. "My mistake, I shouldn't have joked with you. I'm sorry, but tonight, please get a good rest."

Loran sulkily turned the flute in his hand, seemingly with a thousand words in his heart, but he didn't say anything and ultimately nodded in silence.

After a while, Matthew found Old Gito and suggested, "Old Gito, you can take the first half of the night watch, and my summoned creature will handle the second half of the night for safety."

He pointed to Abing, who was with them. Abing was covered in a large reed cloak, blending seamlessly with the rainforest, and was not expensive. Matthew had found it in the market and bought it on a whim.

Old Gito initially wanted to refuse but after looking at Abing for a while, he suddenly changed his mind. "Alright, but be cautious and stay alert at all times."

Matthew nodded and went to lay down his sleeping bag.

"Hey, Matthew, it's obvious that Old Gito doesn't trust me. I have to prove myself to him!" Loran, who had been leaning against the stone wall, whispered to Matthew.

"You know, when we were hunting Sky Giants and Sky Elves in Cloud City, I stayed awake for ten days and nights without closing my eyes! On the morning of the eleventh day, I was still full of energy and played a crucial role in capturing the Sky Giant!"

"Tonight, no matter who is on night watch, I won't fall asleep. I will show that old man what a young person's energy is!"

Seeing his enthusiasm, Matthew asked calmly, "Is this your first time camping in the wilderness?"

Loran thought for a moment and replied, "More or less. I had a luxurious carriage before."

Matthew sincerely advised, "How about you take a short nap first? When everyone is at their most tired in the latter part of the night, you can wake up and show your youthful energy."

Loran yawned, "You make a good point, Matthew. I'll take a quick nap."

The next morning, the first rays of dawn illuminated the cliff, casting light into the cave.

Loran was awoken by a chorus of bird songs. He rubbed his drowsy eyes and looked around the surroundings with satisfaction, only to find that Matthew and Old Gito were already awake and dressed.

"Good morning! Had a good night?" Loran greeted them warmly. "It seems we had a peaceful night, and no one disturbed us. I was actually planning to take the night watch, but the breeze that passed by last night told me that everything was fine, so I went back to sleep."

Matthew and Old Gito exchanged puzzled glances, not knowing what to say.

At that moment, Loran suddenly noticed a few new, silent figures behind Matthew.

"Hey, Matthew, why do you have four skeletons around you? Oh, and a skeleton dog too?" Loran asked curiously. "Are they your summons? Their designs are quite unique!"

Matthew chuckled. "They weren't there last night."

With that, he glanced at the data log.

...

"Log: Your summon Abing killed a Plague Envoy (Level 10), and the Plague Element 'Fungus' increased by 1. Your summon Abing killed a Nightstalker Hound, and your XP +1. Your summon Abing is on a killing spree! Your communication speed with the Rainforest Spirit has been increased!"

...

Over a dozen kill records appeared in front of Matthew, cold text silently recounting the brutality of the night's assault.

In fact, Matthew hadn't woken up much earlier than Loran, as Abing had taken care of these enemies near the cave.

So he hadn't been awakened.

From the timestamps in the battle records, it was easy to see that Abing had stealthily taken out the first two Plague Envoys, while the rest had been killed head-on by the Blade Dancer.

The entire process lasted only three minutes.

Abing had single-handedly wiped out an entire squad composed of Plague Envoys and Nightstalker Hounds! What was even more surprising was that the battle had been executed silently, with even the most alert Old Gito not reacting. It was a testament to the Blade Dancer's strength.

What thrilled Matthew even more was that after Abing killed a wave of enemies, his communication speed with the Rainforest Spirit significantly increased.

"Could it be that slaughter is the shortcut to gaining the favor of the Rainforest Spirit?" Matthew silently noted.

At this moment, he was also pleased that Abing had not disappointed his training. As a 15th-level Blade Dancer who had mastered the Shadow Element, Abing was not only skilled in assassinations but also held his own in direct combat.

In most cases, Abing was proving to be more versatile and, importantly, cost-effective when compared to the Bone Dragon. Every time he thought about the Bone Dragon, Matthew's frustration grew. After the last plague war, Little Boil had sponged off him for three soul crystals and hadn't shared his ability!

This couldn't go on. Matthew decided that after advancing, he would have a serious talk with Abing and Little Boil.

Lately, the benefits of soul crystals hadn't been great for Matthew. As a member of his numerous subordinates, Little Boil should understand the need for a slight pay cut.

If Little Boil couldn't understand, Matthew would have to help him see reason.

"So, you're telling me that the Plague King's men attacked our camp last night, and I had no idea?" Loran finally reacted, staring with innocent eyes.

Old Gito, on the other hand, completely ignored Loran. He furrowed his brow for a moment, then said to Matthew, "You provoked the Plague King? He may not be a big shot, but he's still alive for a reason. We must enter the rainforest as soon as possible. If you plan on returning to Waterside City next time, it's best to disguise yourselves and hide your presence."

"No time to waste; let's set off!"
