Just to let you all know that I am putting your very kind pledges to use, investing in the sound!

Getting the vocals onto the laptop has been hard work for me, but I am reliably informed that this bit of kit will make that task much easier.

Great! I like to turn it up just until it starts to clip, then back off 10-20% so you have enough headroom to adjust gains later in your recording software. look forward to hearing it action.

Thanks Tom, im using audacity but one mic to mono track, would you use two mics in the scarlet and into a stereo track? Or does this not matter?

You can set up a track as mono or stereo. If you only have 1 mic linked to a stereo track most software I have used will replicate the mono material in right and left channels. That said a true stereo approach is, IMO, effective in your artform. Have you heard material from Shibby? She makes great use of the stereo effect such that it sounds like she moving from ear to ear! To do that I think you will need 2 mics.
