I've been looking forward to, and dreading this episode all season...

Ixiataaga

To date, I read at least 4 local articles that a runner drop dead during a cross-country race or marathon. The reported cause of death were cardiac arrest or heatstroke. I will add a third cause: choosing not to stop. Because of this, I cannot applaud Shindo for putting himself through torture and surviving his section. What he did should never be encouraged or inspire others to make that level of self-sacrifice for themselves or for others. In the real world (not anime world), Shindo could have gotten serious complications or even die running in his condition. To lose your life this way is foolish. I read many reviews and comments for this episode and nobody discussed about the harshness of the Hakone Ekiden or the dark side of Shindo's perseverance. SOS is capable of making good discussions so i was hoping to hear what the bros have to say about this. But they talked of Shindo briefly, said nothing mentioned above and spent the rest of their time post-analyzing the race and talking about Haiji. I waited all week for this reaction and was quite disappointed at the end of it.

Just to correct a point the bros made: No, nobody on the Kansai team told Shindo he can quit if he cannot take it. The coach said it, but none of the other 9 runners said so. This is perhaps 1 reason why Shindo never gave up. All 9 of them watched Shindo during his torturous crawl. Any of them could have contacted the coach and have him pass the word to Shindo. No one did. All of them continue to watch him, silently willing Shindo to persevere and finish his section despite his condition. So that the team can stay in the race, regardless of far behind they are now. I understand why they behave this way. Everything is at stake here. Nonetheless, it does not change the fact that what they want Shindo to do is painful and cruel. The title of this episode "even if I break" is really bad taste.

It's the Japanese mentality and pride. From what I understand by watching so many Japanese media, and hearing stories from people who are well-versed in the Japanese culture, giving up and causing trouble to others are considered as shameful. There's a reason why suicide rate in Japan is quite high.

Good thing this is in the anime world where people do foolish things all the time
