Weird translation difference. Crunchyroll version says Hermit Purple can read minds, not "can spy on us". Him dying doesn't prevent Hermit Purple from spying, so that makes a lot less sense than dying to keep his mind from being read.

Some-Stuffs fansubs are hit and miss sometimes, you have to choose between the occasional translation error or the copyright-safe names in the crunchyroll version when it comes to JoJo.

Heh, where do you think the author of HxH was inspired from to write battles of wits. The author is a fan of Araki and took inspiration from JoJo. What you've seen of Stands so far has been early experimentation with a new idea. Part of the reason why JoJo's is a legendary series is how smart the Stand battles are for most of the series.
