I think that "tentacle=rape/sex" stuff is people's problem and it shouldn't be marked as a negative aspect of a show.

This never even crossed my mind when I first watched it. Seriously. if the sight of tentacles trigger sexual feelings that's a personal problem. He's called the thorn mage. He uses vines with thorns all the time. These just didn't have thorns.

Ruth's relationship with Chise is one that Elias understands. He's a familiar, so it's only natural that Ruth understands Chise. More than that, he helps Elias to understand Chise, and it was also a relationship that Elias helped foster. That was also a relationship that began when Chise was still attached to Elias at the hip, so he had no reason to worry. This relationship with Stella is coming right after Chise previously snuck out to London to hang out with Alice. Elias plainly didn't like that, it made him worry. Now Chise is establishing a relationship with another human, and not just that, it's a human with no link to the magical world and they're talking about things that Elias doesn't understand. It's an isolating situation that only serves to build on Elias' recent anxieties. Elias was wrong to be jealous, but when you consider everything it definitely makes sense. I also forgot how pretty Chise's lullaby was. I don't feel it goes too far at all, and I think you're massively misreading the intent of that tentacle scene. I think you should focus less on what tentacles are classically associated with in anime and more on what the scene was actually doing and showing. Look at what the camera is doing and look at what the tentacles are doing. The camera isn't focusing on any part of Chise's body associated with sexuality. In fact, due to her clothes her body's form is obscured. At first, the tentacles are loosely wrapped around her wrists, and those wrists are held at her side at shoulder level. This looks more awkward than anything else. If this were actually a trashy scene, her arms would most likely be held above her head, wrists pinned together by the tentacles. When the tentacles hold onto her more tightly they're wrapped around her whole body, obscuring almost all of it from view save for her head. In scenes that are crafted the way you feared from this scene, tentacles are wrapped around wrists, thighs, waists, and breasts in ways that minimize any obscuring of the girl's body. Tentacles in those scenes are used in a way that evokes bondage. The tentacles in this scene were used in a way that evokes a child desperately clinging to something he doesn't want to lose. I understand why you're wary. Anime can be a minefield to navigate, and I refused to watch Made in Abyss because I'm familiar with certain parts of the manga that bothered me. But I think that Ancient Magus' Bride should have earned more trust by this point. The tentacles were indeed in the manga, and I don't believe the woman that created it would get skeezy with it judging from the vast majority of the rest of the manga.

You wrote exactly what I wanted to say and more eloquently than I could ever have done. I really didn't feel it was "tentacle rapey" at all, because the way it was portrayed wasn't sexualized in any way. Sure, I felt uncomfortable watching that scene, but it was more because Elias overstepped his bounds (again) when it came to Chise's budding independence. I really never even thought of tentacle rape until they mentioned it, and I don't consider myself "innocent."

I feel like them responding to the scene this way completely contradicts the whole nature of Elias' character. Even their own view of him up to this point. Like we're 18 episodes in..D:

Agree with you guys, it feels like they completely disregarded everything they know about Elias and Chise and just blindly labeled it as one of some series obligatory "trash scenes". This is not that kind of show. The scene quite clearly shows how confused and anxious elias is! Children do the same thing when they get uncomfortable or anxious, they find someone to cling to, elias is just a 3m tall monstrous baby when it comes to emotions and chise so it might look "rapey" but it defenitively is not.

Mariku

Well said I wish they will see this. When I saw that scene it didn't remind me of tentacle rape.

for a bit of positivity can we talk about how adorable it is that elias has to sleep on his front becaus of his horns XD
