Aww, I was too late. Got blocked

You have some very fair criticisms of BNHA. It's my second favorite shonen after One Piece, and while it does play the tropes very well I feel like its writing has enough potential that it could probably afford to push the bar a bit more than it does. It treats its girl characters better than a lot of other shonen (especially One Piece), but I think it could do better. Very interesting bracket predictions, I'm really looking forward to seeing your reactions to how this plays out and congratulations again on the Patreon! Hope it continues to get more support!

Thank you! It's little things to be sure, but they should be called out when they happen. Hopefully it's not a sign of things to come. Glad you liked the brackets! Making them was fun!

On Reddit I actually saw someone correctly guess everything except for one match, was pretty impressed

One thing I'd say about MHA, particularly in relation to its fellow Shonen series, is that it always looks to build a wider narrative. Some series achieve this eventually, after an initial period of consolidation, but Horikoshi manages to craft these far-reaching scenarios from very early on in his story, and that to me is incredibly impressive. His writing exudes forethought and proper preparation, which is a facet that many Shonen fail to grasp (sometimes for the entirety of their lifespan). Subtle lines of dialogue, understated character interactions, momentary facial expressions...all of these elements are drawn upon in MHA, as snippets of grander plot threads that are explored in greater detail, as the narrative progresses. Another aspect of the series, that resonates so well with its audience in comparison to other Shonen series, is the handling of disappointment with any number of its characters. Some series sculpt disappointing moments for its characters (predominantly female ones) which are then never built upon/later overcome. This creates a hollow feeling in the reader/watcher, which tends to sour their experience with the series. MHA however, is excellent at avoiding this pitfall. All disappointments are met with learning (it IS a school-based series after all...), growth and future results. Some take short amounts of time (like Bakugou in S1, where after being humbled by Deku in the Battle Trial, later saves him from certain death at the hands of Kurogiri at USJ) while others are a slower burn, but then result in a satisfying payoff later. As such, I look forward to seeing your reactions moving forward, as Horikoshi's measures forethought and meticulous planning become increasingly apparent to you both - aided enormously by the talent you both possess for appreciating a well-written story. Just remember though, executing a combination of payoffs and development (staggered through circumstance, generated by the world's natural pacing - i.e. U.A's school calendar) does not come easily! Patience is both required, and rewarded ;)

I don't really get your complaint about the girls' placement in the bracket. The other way of doing it would be to start out by pitting them against each other, which is exactly the thing that you said before you don't want to happen.

I think bakugou vs uraraka was a great choice. Now here's why:

The manga hasn't been out that long. It has only been going since 2014.

Bakugou vs. Uraraka is a great matchup cause you typically don't see the main female character fighting the main rival, at all in other shonens, and usually they're stuck fighting other females. I much prefer a scenario like bakugou v. uraraka to uraraka v. Momo, id rather have a huge wall for uraraka to try and force her way through than a for sure victory or girls fight girls, guys fight guys scenario. Bakugou's a great choice for the fight too just given his personality, cause you know both of them are going to give their all to try and win.

Argh, can't wait for the next episode. When will they come from now on? Fridays, so it's always a week before youtube?

Great feedback on the genre as a whole and how mha fits into it! We're prepared to be patient! Looking forward to being rewarded as the story strengthens and evolves!

semblanceofsanity

Yeah you're right, it's mostly just disappointing that the ladies quirks seem to be completely outclassed by most of the guys quirks based on our brackets predictions.

semblanceofsanity

You're absolutely right, but because it is Bakugo, we KNOW that she has to lose. That's the part that is disappointing. Even if the fight is 10/10, emotional and epic, we know that Bakugo has to win. His Quirk is top tier, and he's closer tied to the plot of the arc than Uraraka is.

The confirmation of Endeavour as an Abusive Fire Dad in this episode totally made the Zuko resemblance even stronger, to the point that I wonder if Horikoshi was a fan of ATLA.......
