The Base

The doctor frowns as she listens to the report of the soldier in front of her.

“We have not gotten a single report of frozen ones approaching the base from any side since three hours ago,” he reports while stiffly saluting. “All sides are quiet, and our scouts reported seeing the first lieutenant approaching the final remaining tertiary nest located within the abandoned base closest to the secondary nest.”

Ruthers’ frown grows deeper at the second part of the soldier’s statement.

“You said there weren’t any reports of frozen ones approaching? Does that include the tertiary nest he is heading for?” Ruthers asks while tapping her fingers on her arm, her arms crossed over her chest.

“Affirmative, ma’am,” the soldier says, still saluting as the doctor looks down, deep in thought.

Shouldn’t the secondary nest have acted by now? Or even a primary nest? If what the researchers learned about these crystals is true that is.

From what Ruthers understands, these crystals are most likely to be stolen away from their guardians by one of the Tier 4 frozen ones the moment before they’re ready. But instead of that happening, the frozen ones are simply sitting by while the first lieutenant swipes all of their crystals.

The doctor made sure to have a few soldiers keep watch on the first lieutenant when he went to the first several nests, just in case this was a trap or the man decided to betray them. And even they didn’t find anything suspicious.

Other than there being nothing suspicious. Which, in and of itself, is suspicious.

Ruthers tries to dig deeper into what the frozen ones could be planning, only for something to resurface in her memory. Something one of the soldiers overheard the first lieutenant’s team members talking about.

That the frozen ones were interested in capturing the first lieutenant and bringing him to their god.

And as soon as that memory comes to mind, it clicks in her head.

The reason the frozen ones aren’t acting.

Why they’ve just let him go around collecting crystals.

“Send ten squads to the abandoned base ASAP! And order the soldiers stationed there to warn the first lieutenant off entering that base!” Ruthers shouts, her voice growing slightly frantic. “It’s most likely a trap set for him!”

The soldier’s eyes widen in shock, but he quickly responds, “But ma’am, he’s already entered the base! We can’t reach him unless we send our observation units into the base along with him!”

Ruthers slams her fist into the desk, cracking it slightly as she swears.

The frozen ones were most likely allowing him to collect those crystals, giving him a sense of ease as he went through the nests. And now that he’s on the last one, a nest located in an abandoned base thereby making it a perfect ambush location...

“Send the men as soon as possible!” she shouts, making the soldier immediately shout back, “Understood, ma’am!”

Then the soldier runs out, leaving her to collapse into her seat while rubbing her temples as she feels the onset of a headache.

I hope his new abilities over his time hunting the nests will be enough to survive…

But she knows that if a Tier 4 frozen one were to attack him personally, he wouldn’t stand a chance. Regardless of how many abilities he has.

That comfort I felt when entering the abandoned base quickly fades when I realize that the massive amount of cold energy is blocking my senses. At least, with my current level of control over my senses.

So I’m basically going in blind.

But considering the weak wraiths above, and what I’ve seen in the previous nests, I don’t think I need to worry.

Just in case though, I remain on guard at all moments anyways.

I slowly make my way through the underground portion of the base, passing through halls that are built in similar ways to my original base. Some of which are collapsed, blocking the passages. And every once in a while I run into more wraiths. But they’re just as easily dealt with as the ones outside of the base.

Eventually I arrive at the stairs down to the BF2 floor. And when I’m going down the stairs, I find a large hole in the wall of the stairs leading into some sort of ice-coated tunnel.

My eyes narrow slightly. But I can tell that the cold energy isn’t coming from the tunnel, so I ignore it for now and continue moving down the stairs.

Only to end up running into another tunnel. And then another.

What’s making these tunnels?

Also, how isn’t this base unstable? Is it the ice?

I can tell the cold energy is basically freezing absolutely everything solid. Including the dirt beyond the metallic walls of the base.

But is that enough to make it stable?

Not sure. I don’t know much about architecture.

I continue into BF2 before finding some rather… unexpected creatures.

Frozen ones, but they look almost human. Kind of like humans with large icicles growing out of parts of their bodies and glowing blue and black eyes.

Oh, and with scythe arms made out of ice.

Not sure how practical that build is, but they seem incredibly fast.

Despite that though, they don’t seem to notice me.

Can they not see or something? I’m standing right in front of them.

They’re just wandering around with very… strange movements. Kinda like a zombie in a horror movie.

I step through the door into the hallway, and the moment I do that, all of them instantly jerk their heads towards me and move so quickly that I can’t even react. So three scythes move straight at my armor, cutting partially into it and sending me flying back into the stairwell.

“Fuck, that hurt,” I swear while quickly getting back to my feet to counter their follow-up attacks, only to find the creatures having just gone back to their pointless wandering in the hallway again.

I blink in confusion before tilting my head.

Uh… huh?

Territorial maybe?

Well that makes this easier.
