                                                                  Fenrir

I watch along with Dawn as the intruders begin facing the monsters in the prison cell with a lot more difficulty than they had anywhere else in the floor. But they still manage to cut them down eventually after getting past the lycans who are armed with void-touched swords – which is the name I gave to the swords I infused with void mana. A very nice, enchanted weapon that can devour mana of other attacks as long as it still has mana to convert to void mana through the enchantments.

Although if an element that isn’t void is fed to the sword it will take three times as much mana to activate the blade, which doesn’t really make it very usable in a battle unless the wielder has the void element or just has a vast ocean of mana at their disposal. Like a higher Tier cultivator for example.

All in all, I’m rather proud of the creation. It’ll also likely be liked by the intruders since no other person outside of void creatures can use the void element, and this lets them use it in a roundabout way. And the void element is the only element that can simply devour another element through brute force.

Makes it rather useful in certain situations.

Anyways, after they finish dealing with the monsters in the room, I go ahead and reward them as the first clear for a prison cell in the boss room by giving them a single quarter of an ingot of World Ore. Which of course makes them happy, but they don’t seem surprised since I always do that for first clears in a room.

Most likely, they won’t see another World Ore on the entire floor again. Unless they clear the boss that is. But judging by how their conversation is going right now, I don’t really see them clearing the boss first before anyone else. Seeing as how the group appears to be discussing heading back for now and not pressing on.

Rather unfortunate, but to be expected. The group isn’t advancing in cultivation anywhere near as fast as I am after all. So I’m a higher level than them, which means my latest floor is as well.

The boss room is probably too much for them, much less Fang now that he’s been upgraded.

I watch the intruders clear one more prison cell before figuring out what they’re supposed to do for the floor, only for them to begin leaving after that. Likely to go report it to that Mercenary’s Guild of theirs.

It’s a little disappointing that they won’t be testing out the rest of the boss room, but it really is to be expected.

The boss room is designed for the intruders to go through the various prison cells while navigating the maze-like layout on the narrow platforms where they’ll need to find five different switches. After all of these switches are pulled, the lights will begin to flash a red color, showing a path straight to a single platform that will then bring them all down through the floor of the room and into another room. One that’s just as dark as the other one, with only slowly flickering red lights spread throughout the room.

My favorite part of the boss room though has to be Fang’s new upgrades.

I focus on Fang to find him sitting at the center of the room in the dark. But unlike before, the large, three meter long wolf now has a gleam of intelligence behind his eyes. Pure sapience. Amongst other new abilities.

Guess I’ll just have to wait for the next group to pass through before I can test the boss room to its fullest.

“Fenrir?” Dawn suddenly asks, drawing my attention to her where I find her floating on top of my avatar. So I move my main consciousness back into my avatar before turning my head around to look at her as I respond, “Yeah?”

She hesitates for a moment before eventually asking, “Do you think the original Fenrir brought you to Midgard for the purpose of finishing off the System for good? To do what he couldn’t?”

I freeze slightly at that possibility, only to shake my head.

“Whether that was his reasoning or not, it doesn’t matter,” I tell her while walking over to my core and lying down next to it. “Fenrir saved me from having to spend eternity in the darkness of the void until I one day died. For that alone, I’ll fulfil the goal he died to achieve. But not for a long time, of course.”

Dawn doesn’t say anything to that. So I continue, “I personally don’t think he had it in mind when bringing me to Midgard though.”

“Why not?” Dawn asks right away as if latching onto that.

Guess this has been eating at her quite a bit.

“I just didn’t get that feeling when talking to either him or the Undine,” I say with a light shrug of my avatar’s front shoulders. “And he seemed very surprised to find me in the void in the first place. So I doubt it was planned out.”

Dawn doesn’t say anything to this. So I stay silent as well.

It was rather startling to learn the reason behind why Fenrir died in the first place. But I am kind of happy that I did. Since it gives me a faint feeling of closure.

I look up at my core, which is still glowing with a faint black light in the center of the grandiose core room that Dawn had me construct. One kind of like a throne room but with my core floating above a pedestal at the end instead of a throne.

The void element in general is a unique element in a lot of ways. Which is the reason why it’s the only one capable of destroying the System itself.

Before I fully commit to the idea of destroying the System though, I would like to gather more information on it. And to do that, I’ll have to grow stronger.

A lot stronger.
