                                                           Cassandra
                                         Year 819 | Month 2 | Day 20

I’m not sure which detail is important out of that statement. The fact that the invaders are working in the duchy deeply enough that they can openly give quests, or the fact that they are giving quest in the first place, using the adventurers’ greed and lack of patriotism to their advantage.

“They’re probably treating them perfectly well,” one of the twins says with a frown, “otherwise they wouldn’t be able to continue using them as cheap labor against the monsters.”

My brows furrow at that.

The adventurers are talking about the invaders treating ‘them’ and ‘they’ well, but not this group? Does that mean this group’s not working for the invaders?

Unable to hear my questions, the noblewoman of their group turns around and begins walking away from the fog in the direction of the duchy as she calls back, “Either way, we’ll see when we get there.”

I then watch for a bit as the group leaves.

My lips purse in thought for a second, but just a single glance at my outfit and the claws on my hands makes me decide against asking them for information.

Not only do I look more like a sacred beast now than a human, but I’m also wearing the clothes of an invader. So it’ll probably be best to get something to cover up my under armor first before talking to anyone.

Something like a cloak.

I then turn my head to look at my back with a frown.

Assuming a cloak is thick enough to stop that red light from shining through it…

I shake my head at the thought before putting my gloves and shoes on to cover my claws and jumping between the trees to follow after the group, since they clearly know the way out of the forest.

Besides. They might just start talking on their own about whatever is going on in the kingdom.

                                                     Several hours later

Or I guess they can stay silent for most of the trip over here.

I turn my sour gaze away from the four adventurers as we finally arrive at the clearing of grass outside of the Dark Forest.

Not even a second later, a mission complete note appears in my vision, reminding me that I actually had a mission still uncomplete.

Mission Complete!

Title: Dark Forest Escape!

The World Tree’s Vein in the Dark Forest is surrounded by powerful Tier 2 and Tier 3 monsters both spawned and gathered there by the World Tree’s Ichor.

Reach Tier 2 and make your way out of the Dark Forest!

Reward for reaching Tier 2 and escaping the Dark Forest:

3000 EXP and a Tier 2 [Random Item Draw]

________________________

Hmm.

Three thousand EXP is a good amount. Although not for the point I’m at right now.

As for the Tier 2 item… I’m almost Tier 3 at this point.

But I guess any items are useful right now. Seeing as I barely have any.

At that thought, I pull out the knife that I got before, only to look at it in my hand with a grimace.

It already felt awkward to hold before I leveled Claws of Wrath, so now it really feels awkward… does this mean that I’m gonna be stuck using nothing but my claws and bare hands as my weapons?

Because while the claws are very nice weapons, that’s practically wasting all of the years I spent training in knives and swords as well.

I stare at the knife for a few seconds before sighing and putting it back in the storage pouch.

Nothing I can do about that now. At least most of my training was in unarmed combat.

Almost as if sensing I’m done mentally complaining, another System note appears asking if I want to use the item draw now or not, so I select to go ahead and use it now.

While the item draw is doing it’s magic, I glance at the adventurers to see them crossing the clearing towards the West, in the direction of Alltend.

Now the question is, where am I going to find a cloak? Because there is no way I’m walking into a major city with ominous, red markings shining through my clothes on my back.

I lean back against the tree I’m on before focusing on the item draw once it finishes.

[Random Item Draw]

Now selecting a random Tier 2 item. Please wait.

Congratulations! You have obtained the Absolute Compass

This compass will always work no matter where you are and will be temporarily stored in your System Item Storage for a period of 72 hours!

I blink twice at the note before frowning.

A compass.

Escaping from one of the five or so most dangerous places in Midgard while the world – or plane I guess – is going to hell gave me a damn compass.

I stare at the note for a few more seconds before it disappears, leaving me staring at the clearing below me instead.

Several seconds pass in silence, with the only noise being that of the quiet chirping of birds outside of the Dark Forest and the wind blowing through the foliage.

I eventually let out a sigh before looking at the adventurers – who are currently getting close to the hill at the other end of the clearing – once more and jumping down from the tree.

Guess the item doesn’t matter much. I didn’t even remember that I had that mission in the first place, so having a better way to keep track of my position will certainly help.

Anyways, I look around the clearing for a few more seconds, only to begin walking in the same direction the adventurers went.

I’m starting to wish that I paid more attention in my geography classes. But I doubt any kid would care much about learning the locations of hundreds of villages, so it’s not really my fault.

Mostly.

With that thought in mind as a minor comfort, I continue making my way across the clearing while looking up at the sun.

It’s nice to see direct sunlight again at least.
