Yeah one of the things I try to remember in design space is that detail creates attraction. So a lot of people lean on realistic to do their wings when the rest of their drawing is done using smart art techniques like simplification. This creates a huge imbalance of detail between the spots you should be looking over quickly (wings) and the body and faces. So you either pump up the detail on the rest of the piece or you draw a ton of feathers that pull you away from the rest of your image. It's because wings are one of those things that people don't have strong 'symbols' for. We understand wings are made of feathers so we draw all the feathers. They also aren't an easy shape to simplify - it took me a long time to find shapes I was happy with that conveyed wings in a satisfying way. I'm happy with how it works out but always looking to improve on it more, wings are hard.
