Stop an undead necromancer from raising an army in the catacombs of an abandoned temple

Rise of the Raven Prince

Rise of the Raven Prince is a Fifth Edition adventure intended for three to five characters of 1st to 2nd level and is optimized for a party of four characters with an average party level (APL) of 1. Characters who complete this adventure should earn enough experience to reach 2nd level. An undead necromancer is raising minions in the catacombs of an abandoned temple. This adventure takes place in the Freelands campaign setting but fits into any existing campaign with an ancient temple and catacombs with only a few modifications.

Backstory

Razhul was once a vibrant young man who lived a simple life learning magic with the shaman of a nomadic tribe living in the Sargoth Plains. The tribe affectionately dubbed him the “Raven Prince” because he was the chieftain’s son, and his raven familiar Lucious never left his side. The orc raiders that tore through the tribe shattered this idyllic life, and he became the sole survivor of his people, barely escaping with his life. For years he sought a way to gain the power he needed to hunt down the orcs and enact his revenge.

The young mage eventually joined forces with a party of adventurers, learning what scraps of spells he could find as they traveled across the Freelands. While clearing a tomb, Razhul and his companions came across a nest of necromancer cultists raising undead minions. After narrowly defeating the cult, Razhul discovered a tome of necromantic rituals, and he began to study the dark art in secret.

The new necromancer eventually gained enough knowledge and skills to put his plan into motion—he would become undead himself and raise an army of minions to strike back at the orcs and have his vengeance. His adventuring party friends caught him in this dark ritual and attempted to stop him, but it was too late. The now undead necromancer slew two of his companions and drove another to insanity in the process. Razhul raised his former compatriots as his very first minions. Embracing the title of Raven Prince to honor his fallen tribe, he has now made his lair in the crumbling catacombs of a ruined temple, gathering the bones of the interred to begin to build his army.

Hey! I ran this adventure for my friends with three 1st level characters, and I think it was great how much attention to detail you gave to rules for the interactions with characters and environments. However, I have two improvement requests: 1. Please add a stat block for the Swarm of Undead Ravens in the final room? Undead Ravens are not a standard 5E monster and as such creating a stat block from scratch is difficult 2. Please balance out the CRs between different monster that the party encounters in the adventure. In particular the Swarms of Insects and Undead Ravens pose a much higher challange than the Skeletons, Zombies or even Razhul himself! My party nearly died to the insects, one member fell to the Undead Ravens on one hand and on the other hand, Razhul died before he could even reach his turn in the initiative table. I also noticed Skaldrot Embermaul is ridiculously healthy (67hp) and if my party had not circumvented him entirely, they would all have easily been TPK-ed in his area.

Hi there! Thank you for the kind words and your suggestions! I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. 1. As noted in the adventure text, the swarm of undead ravens uses the swarm of ravens stat block with the Type changed to undead. The stat block can be found in the Monster Manual on page 339 or in the SRD on page 391. 2. Each encounter is balanced for a party of four 1st-level characters, with the total of all encounters equaling the daily XP budget as per the DMG. However, this is a difficult adventure and was designed to be that way; it's not a walk in the park for most parties, and an unbalanced one will find it even more difficult. Skaldrot Embermaul, for instance, is a deadly encounter. However, it's also meant to be a chance to roleplay with the NPC and learn the valuable lesson that not all encounters need to end in combat, but if your characters want to play murder hobo, they better pick their fights wisely. On the flip side, the last encounter with Razhul is also a deadly combat encounter where a TPK is a genuine possibility, and at least one or two characters may die. You can't always account for a series of lucky rolls, unfortunately, which it sounds like your players had if three 1st-level characters managed to all roll higher initiative than the Prince and then proceeded to deal 32+ damage to him in the first round. I do appreciate the thoughts and suggestions! If you ever want to discuss the theory behind the encounters further, you can join our discord and reach out to me directly: https://discord.gg/sA8WrG3vFv Thanks again! ~ TJ
