I know I'd originally said Melly was short for Melanie last month, but then I thought of this. The date of the second Game of Thrones book release that had Melisandre's first appearance and the year Melly theoretically would have been born lined up perfectly! Besides, if your name was Melanie, you'd probably just go by Melanie. If your name was Melisandre, going by Melly might be more appealing.
