Regarding protecting a ship traveling at a large fraction of c: Some science fiction uses a gigantic chunk of water ice to serve as a shield and as a source of reaction mass to use with a fission, fusion or antimatter energy source.

Favourite advanced sub-luminal drive: The Epstein Drive (magnetically channelled fusion drive ) as in The Expanse. Surely possible ;-)
