So my theory is that Sukana did that too Choso as in season one when he one of the other upper class demons ran a domain expsanion they met sunka and the rule is no body is allow to enter that therefore Choso must of had some sort of link between Sukana cuasing him to wake up and save Yuji by making him a "brother" therefore guilty for killing him. Also Sukana needs to keep itori alive so when he lost the fight last time Sukana reapiared his heart and organs likey doing the sme as for Sukna Yuji is just the vessle for his awakening and the pack they made is meant to keep them one in the same.

I don't think it was Sukuna, after all it gave the impression to me that he himself was confused by the guy not finishing Yuji. Not to mention that the case you mentioned was Mahito who exclusively has the power to interfere with souls, and Sukuna somehow has a higher mastery of this control and being arrogant than the way it is, he decided to attack the guy. At no point so far has Sukuna actually acted to keep yuuji alive, most of the time he has only interfered out of his own free will. And he mentions on p first season that he only cares about Megumin for some reason.
