They were being a bit confusing in the anime because the terminology used here was completely different from the light novel. To go over this: An Archdemon is one who reaches the maximum level of magicules for a demon. If one maintains that for 2000 years (that is, doesn't lose in battle, because demons constantly battle each other, but losing means knocking some magicules off the top), they become what the anime calls a Demon Lord. That is equivalent to a Demon Lord Seed, which the anime is also calling a Demon Lord Factor. Having reached this level, they can manifest the Demon Lord Presence (aka Lord's Ambition). At this level, a trigger can bring them to the next level; in Diablo's case, it was being named. The anime called this level Daemon Lord, but the novels call it Demon Peer. There are steps within this level as well, like Demon Count, Demon Duke, etc. There is another level above Demon Peer that they didn't mention but that level is an awakened (True) Demon Lord, which the novels call a Devil Lord. That is where Guy is. At leach level, the older the demon is, the stronger. Also we should note that Diablo has a physical body. ........ That head Demon Hunter "passed the test", that means he didn't pass out from fear when Diablo released his Demon Lord Presence. Then he figured out that Diablo had to be equivalent to Rouge and Blanc (though not at the same evolutionary level). That's when he begged to be let go. After that, when he heard that Diablo was a Daemon Lord, he passed out from joy that he escaped. He was the only one there, except Saare to some degree, who had a delayed realization, who had some inkling of who he was dealing with.

I guess by the end of the episode it became obvious why they inserted the Falmuth/Diablo scene when they did. The Seven Days Clergy has to arrive about simultaneously in both Falmuth and Tempest. It was one of the reasons they couldn't separate the two events and give people an action fix to break up the meetings. It does seem that the author likes to set up these elaborate convergences of events as the climax from time to time.
