I'm slightly biased against D&D necromantic building because our longest running exalted campaign featured a creation named "10" crafted from ten mounted riders and their horses that had screaming horse heads for fingers. After that, run of the mill Liches are just disappointing. I'm sorry, D&D, you need to get way more awesome.

Warhammer fantasy rpg (2nd edition at least, can't speak for the others) started with just the basic zombie/skelly/wight but once the vampire sourcebook came around, we got rules for reanimating the bigger stuff and stitching multiple creatures together to make an unholy abomination against Morr (the example given involved the top-half of an ogre and the abdomen of a giant spider). Also a ritual to raise a sunken ship as a ghost ship.

Yeah, Necromancer seems like the type to have a whip. In fact, girl, take his whip, steal his horse, steal Gunslinger's hat and just go full Necro-rancher.
