I'm with the setting police on this one. You don't go from zero to internal combustion engine in one generation. I don't care if your Int score is 20 - nobody's THAT smart.

The closest I allow the fancy players go is Steampunk-ish things, powered balloons, excessively large steam engines to cross the world, stuff like that.
