My problem with secret identities is that mine seem to inevitably be blown in the first session and then the whole idea is useless.  My poor vigilante pals around with a half orc slayer who is as sweet as pie, but unfortunately can't seem to remember to call his friend by the right name whenever he's in his super-secret crime-fighting outfit.  Thankfully a lot of head trauma has prevented the criminals they're taking out from finding him out and hunting him down later out of costume.

Back in college, I was starting a Camarilla game, and a friend and I talked out what her idea for a character was. As it turned out, it meshed really well with the "Ventrue" primogen I had planned (actually Lasombra antitribu), so I offered it to her (knowing she wouldn't tell anyone the secret that might come up later in the game, because she loves secrets coming out later in a game). Unfortunately, session one, the party figured it out... because they just looked over at her character sheet. Lesson learned for me, as the Storyteller: advise people have a public character sheet for deep-cover purposes.
